In this article we will tell you if the wallpaper can be painted and what paint is best for this.

To find out how to paint wallpaper, you should understand their types and types of paints.

What kind of wallpaper can you paint?

To understand whether the paint will damage the wallpaper, it is important to figure out what types of wallpaper are and which ones are pasted in your apartment. You can use wallpaper for painting:

  • paper;
  • vinyl;
  • non-woven;
  • fiberglass.

The most inexpensive option for wall covering is paper wallpaper. Cheap paper wallpaper is completely unsuitable for staining, as it tears quickly and can peel off the walls under the weight of the paint. If you repaint such wallpapers, then first making sure that they are two-layer (maybe one painting will not spoil them, but another time it will no longer be possible to repaint them).

Vinyls are more durable and moisture resistant, although they have a paper base in most knots. Such textured wallpapers do not always lend themselves well to staining, as unpainted areas may remain in the recesses of the texture. This will give an unaesthetic look to the entire room.

You can already experiment with non-woven wallpaper – they are stronger and more resistant to various damages, therefore they are more suitable for painting. They can be dyed 5 to 10 times.

But the most suitable for painting are fiberglass wallpapers. Strong, reliable and durable – thanks to these characteristics, they can be painted with almost any type of paint up to 15 times.

What paint to paint the wallpaper

For painting the wallpaper, paints are used:

  • alkyd;
  • water-dispersive.

The latter are the most affordable. They can be used to paint paper and fiberglass. They are odorless, dry quickly and are environmentally friendly. They tend to form a film on the wallpaper that protects the wallpaper from minor damage and prevents the development of mold. Such paints are subdivided into:

  • latex;
  • acrylic;
  • acrylic latex-based;
  • water-based.

Latex paint is suitable for any wallpaper. Such a surface can be washed, and the wallpaper painted with it will serve for a long time. For non-woven wallpaper, it is preferable to choose a water-based acrylic paint. When using latex-based acrylic paints, several coats should be applied to get a good finish.

Now you know how to paint wallpaper, which ones can be painted and which paints to use. The painting process does not take much time, and the result is a wonderful redecoration and an updated interior.
