How and how to fertilize strawberries when planting for the winter
Garden strawberries are a popular berry. A rare summer dessert, a romantic date, or a face mask go without it. The presence of fragrant berries on the table depends on how you fertilize the strawberries. This is the case when the cart is prepared in winter.
Top dressing is needed to increase the number of ripe berries, to feed the mother plant, to maintain soil fertility. It will not hurt to insulate the seedlings with peat, sawdust, straw. They create a blanket for the soil and promote drainage. The plant will thank the owner in full!
They begin to feed the plants in September-October after removing excess shoots. They try not to overdo it with fertilizers – there will not be a good result: small, unsweetened berries are unlikely to please gardeners.
Remember that it is not worth treating the soil with nitrogen fertilizers at this time. They come in handy in the spring – to accelerate plant growth.
Traditional methods: how to fertilize strawberries in the fall
In the fall, they use affordable products that are not difficult to prepare or purchase in a store.
- Organic fertilizers. Overripe cow or horse manure, no more than 3 kg per 1 square meter of soil, chicken droppings are the best fertilizers for strawberries. Chicken needs to be diluted, 1 liters of clean water is taken for 10 liter of droppings. Pour under each bush.
- Wood ash is used. It is poured under each plant or combined means are prepared: ash + phosphorus or potassium dressings.
- Whey or sour fermented bread mixed in half with water have also become unusual but effective methods for improving future yields.
The main thing during this period is to decide on the onset of frost on the ground. So, in September it is better to fertilize the plants with liquid dressings, in October – dry ones.

Choosing the right place for these seedlings will increase the yield by a third. Let this be the soil where the carrots or greens grew. If earlier cabbage or potatoes were grown here, the land is allowed to rest.
When planting in autumn, the soil is prepared – they take soil, compost, rotten leaves, cow or horse manure, in total – in a bucket, 200 g of wood ash. Everything is mixed and strawberries are planted in this soil.
For autumn planting, it is good to add sand to the soil. He will create the necessary drainage and relieve the future fruiting plant from moisture stagnation.
How to fertilize strawberries for the winter?
Before the onset of cold weather, if the owner of the summer cottage just remembered the summer berry, it is fed with dry fertilizers. But doing just that is not enough. The following methods will help to preserve the root system of the bushes:
- Plants are insulated, but strictly after the onset of the first frost, otherwise the roots will undermine.
- A layer of peat, straw or potato tops is used for insulation: the optimal thickness is 8-15 cm.
- It is advisable to check such natural shelters even in cold weather. You need to slightly lift the straw with a stick to give air access to the strawberry rhizome and check if there is any delight.
Only by investing labor in the land, gardeners can count on a bountiful harvest. But strawberries require more than just winter sleep. In the spring, it is also necessary to pay attention to it with a spring fertilization course. It will be aimed at its active growth and development of culture.
