Hosta: care in the fall

Hosta is a non-flowering perennial plant. There are a huge number of hosta varieties. They differ in leaf color and size. The host is used to create a varied and interesting landscape design. Proper care of the host in the fall will delight the greenery on the site in the next season.

In the fall, a large amount of work is required to prepare the plant for winter. It includes several stages. It is important during this period not to forget about caring for the plant so that it continues to grow in the spring.

Hosta care in the fall consists of plant transplanting, pruning and preparation for winter.

Components of autumn care:

  • transfer;
  • pruning;
  • preparation for winter.

Each of the stages needs to be given due attention. Next, we will look at each item separately.

Without a host transplant, it can overgrow. The best time to transplant is autumn. This process is not complicated:

  1. Dig up the plant, find shoots with buds on the roots and separate them from the main root. Separate the shoots carefully, without damaging the plant.
  2. Sprinkle with ash or potassium permanganate on the root.
  3. Plant a new seedling in a previously prepared hole filled with fertilizers. The hole must be at least 30 centimeters deep.
  4. Mulch the seedlings and water abundantly.

Through this step, you will prevent overgrowth of the plant and maintain its attractive appearance.

Pruning is carried out in order to get rid of pests. It is necessary to cut off dead and yellow leaves, and then loosen the ground.

Pruning should be done after the end of the flowering period, when the leaves have begun to turn yellow and sink to the ground.

You can also treat the hosta with a pest control agent. If parasites have settled on the leaves, and you do not cut off the dead leaves, then with the onset of cold weather the pests will go underground and it will be difficult to get them.

Preparing the hosta for winter is an important part of caring for her in the fall. It needs to be covered with a special agromaterial. Do not cover it with leaves, as this is not enough shelter for the winter.

Mulching is also recommended to protect the roots from freezing.

For shelter for the winter, use only materials that are breathable.

These stages are not difficult, but by paying attention to each of them, you will keep the host green, and it will continue to grow and delight you in the spring. With proper care, it can grow in one place for about 20 years, so don’t neglect fall care.
