The wave of Omikron infections in Poland is weakening. Each day brings fewer infections and fewer hospitalizations. However, among the people Omikron experiences all the time, there are children, a group that has been relatively mildly infected in previous waves. The little ones go to intensive care units in Polish hospitals.

  1. In Poznań, even several dozen children a day go to hospital as a result of infection with the Omikron variant
  2. Although the most common symptoms of infection are those resembling a cold, it happens that the youngest experience COVID-19 much more severely
  3. Laryngitis, pneumonia and hepatitis are just some of the diseases that children go to the emergency room with. PIMS, i.e. childhood multi-system inflammation, cannot be forgotten either

Many children are still hospitalized. They are mostly little ones

The inhibiting fifth wave of the epidemic in Poland to some extent lulls the vigilance of citizens. The coronavirus seems to be on a retreat, and the Omikron variant is said to be milder than that responsible for the fourth Delta wave. However, one cannot speak of peace yet, especially when it comes to children. And these still go to Polish hospitals due to symptoms accompanying COVID-19 or appearing after the infection.

Dr. hab. Ewelina Gowin, infectious diseases specialist, pediatrician, deputy head of the observation and infectious disease department at ul. Nowowiejski in Poznań. As he says in an interview with “Wyborcza”, most often children under the age of five need help. However, it also happens that these are slightly older patients.

– We currently treat a lot of infected infants and newborns. But not only. The ambulance is taking a teenager with shortness of breath to us. The boy has not undergone vaccinations and is seriously infected – enumerated dr hab. Gowin.

The list of diseases with which the youngest infected are now hospitalized include hepatitis, obstructive bronchitis and high fever.

– A new symptom that we have not seen before is laryngitis. A few months old babies have feeding problems and develop a fever. They often become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and rotaviruses simultaneously. They also suffer from diarrhea, vomiting and fever. They are dehydrated and weakened – says the specialist.

The epidemic of the youngest. Children with PIMS are also sent to hospitals

The youngest people infected with COVID-19 are also sent to the municipal hospital. Karol Jonscher in Poznań. The problem is not only young patients who suffer from coronavirus infection, but also children suffering from PIMS, i.e. children’s multi-system inflammation.

– A lot of infected children come to us. We are also seeing new cases of PIMS, i.e. multi-system inflammatory syndrome, which is a complication of COVID-19, admits Prof. Magdalena Figlerowicz.

On February 19, three children infected with coronavirus were detained in intensive care at the city hospital in Poznań. These are patients with severe comorbidities.

Hospitalizations of infected children have been going on for several weeks

Since the beginning of February, employees of Polish hospitals have been talking about the growing number of the youngest COVID-19 patients. In the Pomorskie Voivodeship, the children’s wards were “bursting at the seams” at that time.

– For two weeks, we have been observing a clear increase in hospitalization of the youngest patients in the infectious diseases hospital in Gdańsk. Currently, all places are occupied, even additional beds are added. When one patient is discharged, another patient is waiting for him in the emergency room, said Tadeusz Jędrzejczyk, director of the Health Department in the Pomeranian Voivodeship Marshal’s Office, quoted by the portal pomorskie.eu.

The situation looked very disturbing also in Olsztyn. The number of little patients there was so large that some of them were even sent home.

– Parents say that children are pouring through their hands and it really looks like this – the director of the children’s hospital, Dr.Krystyna Piskorz-Ogórek commented for PAP at the time.
