Hospital Code of Conduct: Etiquette, Tips, Videos

If the person you are working with is sick, the norms of etiquette allow you to limit yourself to a phone call. Do not tire him with a long conversation, it will be enough to inquire about his health and wish a speedy recovery.

If you decide to visit a colleague, be sure to ask permission, especially if it is a woman. You are used to seeing your colleague fit, energetic, nicely dressed and well-combed. She may not want you to see her while she is sick.

For the visitor

  • it is advisable not to come to the clinic for the first three days. (Relatives are an exception.) It is better to visit your friend or co-worker closer to recovery, when there is more need for communication;
  • if the person is very sick, ask close relatives about their health before visiting. Acquaintances can visit a seriously ill person if asked to do so;
  • the hospital has a visit schedule, and it must be observed. Do not interfere with doctors and patients, trying to get a visit at a time convenient only for you;
  • it is difficult to enact ease if the patient is incurable. Try to comfort the patient with gentle words, stroke his hand, hug – this will serve as a consolation for him. Better to distract the person’s attention by engaging him in conversations on a different topic. Make sure he gets tired as little as possible;
  • do not linger when visiting, especially if the patient is in serious condition;
  • do not speak loudly, respect others in the ward;
  • if they call you on a mobile phone, and there are seriously ill patients in the ward, it is better to go out and talk in the corridor;
  • if a doctor came to the patient during your visit, do not interfere, it is best to leave the ward for a short time. The doctor may want to do an examination;
  • during the visit, it is better to communicate in the lobby if the patient can get up. If walks are allowed, you can walk around the hospital grounds. It is useful for the patient to change the environment in which he is constantly located;
  • do not use harsh perfume for a visit to the clinic;
  • if there are several patients in the ward, then you need to say hello to everyone.

Prohibited phrases:

  • It’s fabulous on the street, and you are lying around here!
  • What a wretched ward you have!
  • What a terrible hospital!

Do not sit in the ward, your visit should be short-lived. Remember that a sick person gets tired quickly. Questions: “Aren’t you tired?”, “Maybe I should leave?” – most often inappropriate. You will be restrained out of simple politeness. The visit time is no more than 20-30 minutes.

But there is nothing worse than “must” visits. The soul does not lie – do not go! Send SMS, call.

What to bring to the patient?

  • if you want to bring food, ask before visiting what the patient would like to eat. Do not bring large quantities of food;
  • during illness, a person’s immunity is weakened. He needs vitamins. Various fruits: bananas, oranges, apples, tangerines – all this will delight the patient;
  • it is advisable to bring a small bouquet of flowers, without a strong smell. So it will be more convenient to place it on the bedside table. Bring a container where you can put flowers – the hospital does not have vases. Instead of a bouquet, you can give a flower in a pot. Good too;
  • do not interfere with wet wipes. Drinking water. Fruit or vegetable juice. Yogurt;
  • hygienic lipstick. Patients often have dry lips and hygienic lipstick will be salvation;
  • bring an interesting magazine. In the hospital, reading a magazine is less tiring than a long book. The magazine can be shared with a roommate or simply left at the hospital for those who wish to read. Do not bring the patient articles and books about his illness;
  • it is appropriate for an elderly lady to present a warm scarf or stole for future walks;
  • if the patient stays in the hospital for a long time, you can bring a small TV or radio, a player, a laptop, if you have the opportunity. It all depends on the patient’s condition and the situation.

Patient

If there are several people in your room with the same diagnosis, this does not mean that the treatment will be the same. Each has its own medical history and its own characteristics of the body. Therefore, you should not compare yourself with others, be interested in who was assigned what.
