Hormonal changes in the body of a pregnant woman are able to cause chronic rhinitis, which passes after delivery and is completely safe for the developing child. The temporary condition is due to the increase in estrogen levels.

In order to alleviate the ailment, it is recommended to use natural methods, taken not so much from the advice of our grandmothers, but from modern gynecologists.

Like any other cataract…

Hormonal rhinitis is no different from the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It is usually associated with the accumulation of watery secretion from the nose, it originates from inflammation of the nasal mucosa or paranasal sinuses. Catarrh is accompanied by the sensation of nasal blockage and the movement of secretions on the posterior wall of the throat. Headaches, mild fever, conjunctivitis and cough may also occur. If we are dealing with a nosebleed, we should sit down and slightly tilted forward to squeeze the wings of the nose. In addition, the relief should bring an ice pack to the nose, which will somewhat close the dilated blood vessels inside the nasal cavity.

Hormonal rhinitis is not due to infection or allergies. As we mentioned in the introduction, it is associated with an increase in the level of estrogens, which contribute to the stimulation of the cholinergic system, responsible for the reaction of the nasal mucosa and its glands. In addition, it makes breathing difficult, because the deterioration of the comfort of taking a breath has already been affected by the lifting of the diaphragm towards the chest, resulting from the enlargement of the uterus along with the abdominal cavity. In this case, anti-allergic or anti-inflammatory drugs can only slightly improve well-being.

Hormonal rhinitis during pregnancy is a physiological matter. We can encounter it after the first half of pregnancy. Due to the fact that diagnostic methods for pregnant women are limited, it is customary to limit ourselves to the clinical picture. Symptoms of infection include muscle pain, fever, and fatigue that are not related to hormonal rhinitis.

Other examples of hormonal catarrh is a runny nose associated with hypothyroidism and taking hormonal contraception.

Simple remedies for hormonal catarrh

If rhinitis during pregnancy is painful, natural methods will help.

  • The first is nasal rinsing. Let’s use a hypertonic saline solution.
  • We can also use sea water for the nose.
  • Home inhalations with the use of essential oils are also effective, among which lavender, lemon and pine are the most recommended.
  • Let’s take care of optimal air humidification in our apartments, otherwise dry air will exacerbate the symptoms of rhinitis. Humidifiers mounted on radiators or a damp towel spread over them are enough.
  • Of the drugs, only corticosteroids are recommended, which affect only the nasal mucosa and do not pose a threat to the child.
