Most people have heard of homeostasis, but few can explain what it means and what it is. Homeostasis, however, is extremely important to the human body; is a process that allows our body to maintain balance in changing conditions. What is homeostasis? What influences it? What can disturbances of homeostasis be?

Homeostasis – meaning and action

Homeostaza signifies the balance of the organism. The word is derived from the Greek words homois, meaning equal, and stasis, which means permanent. Homeostaza it consists in maintaining the balance of the internal environment of the human body in relation to external conditions. These are not conducive to survival – that is why man is separated from their influence by the skin, lungs, kidneys and digestive tract. Moreover, homeostasis it consists in functioning in the environment while consuming as little energy as possible. It is also responsible for supplying the human body with the nutrients needed for life, such as vitamins, minerals, elements, fatty acids and amino acids.

Maintenance homeostasis it is associated with the constant control of the primary parameters vital signs such as, for example, arterial blood pressure, body temperature, body fluid volume. They also include blood pH, osmotic pressure, and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood. Control these parameters it is possible with the help of receptors, which in turn transmit information to interpreters located in the central nervous system. They, as the name suggests, interpret information. If it contains a deviation from the norm, the interpreters send a signal to the effectors to react and regulate parameterdepending on the circumstances.

Homeostaza of the human body is possible due to adaptive mechanisms. They are responsible for the fact that the body reacts to external factors, such as frost or high air temperature. Their operation is based on feedback which ensures that they all do parameters are at the right level. There are two types of feedback – negative and positive. The first is to inhibit the trigger. Positive feedback, on the other hand, works by stimulating a trigger. The nervous system and the endocrine glands are primarily responsible for the proper functioning of these mechanisms.

Homeostasis disorders

Unfortunately for disorders body balance can come about for a variety of reasons. Genetic diseases or an abnormal structure of internal organs may be responsible for this state of affairs. Moreover, the disorder homeostasis conditions and ailments caused by environmental changes, such as pollution. Excessive stress is also important in this matter, diet and physical activity – improper feeding system and a small amount of exercise can also disrupt homeostasis.

Mental homeostasis – what does it matter?

Proper homeostasis on the biological and physiological level, it is extremely important because it also has consequences for the mental balance of a person. This is because physiological needs directly translate into mental health. What’s more, it also works the other way around, as previously mentioned feedback. All diseases, infections, injuries or poisoning adversely affect the control of the body’s balance. Malaise negatively affects the psyche. Impaired mental health, in turn, weakens the physical condition.
