Home isolation concerns a person who has tested positive for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the body. It takes 10 days. But it can be shortened. Under what circumstances? Joanna Równiak from Olsztyn’s Sanepid explains.
- Home isolation of someone who tested positive for coronavirus can be shortened by a doctor
- Based on the symptoms, or rather the lack of symptoms, and tests – says Joanna Równiak from WSSE in Olsztyn
- Quarantine of an infected person’s family members may also be reduced
- More information can be found on the Onet homepage
Can the insulation be shortened?
Home isolation concerns a person who has been infected with the coronavirus. It begins on the day the person receives a positive diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2 and lasts for 10 days.
One, which perhaps not everyone knows, may be abbreviated.
– Earlier, a doctor may release you from isolation. Based on symptoms, or rather the absence of symptoms and tests. This is the doctor’s decision, says Joanna Równiak from the Provincial Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Olsztyn.
- In Great Britain, the number of hospitalizations increased by 54%. This mainly affects children
Grzegorz had such an opportunity, but, as he tells us, he did not take advantage of it. – It was in March. I had a positive test, all symptoms but only lasted a few days. The doctor suggested that I shorten the isolation if the symptoms disappear and they do not recover within three days – says Grzegorz and points out that not all infected get such a chance. – I told my friend about this possibility, he went to his doctor, but this doctor said that he did not know anything about this possibility – he adds.

There are false-positive results
Joanna Równiak from the Sanepid in Olsztyn also tells us about other reasons for early release from isolation.
– There are also false positive results. People work in laboratories and mistakes happen there too. The result of the laboratory test may be incorrect. There are times when someone takes a test and the result is positive, but has no symptoms, and can talk to a doctor about freeing them from isolation. And the doctor, on the basis of specific documents, re-examinations, and an interview, can make such a decision – he explains
- Gloomy forecasts for 2022. Up to 3 billion infections with Omikron
– But it happens very rarely. These are exceptional cases. They can be about a doctor, for example. He has a lot of research done. And suddenly it comes out positive. But he knows he had no right to come up with such a result. Because he had no symptoms, he was not exposed to contact, nothing was happening. He suspects that the result is incorrect, he takes another test and comes out negative – adds Równiak.
– False positives are very rare, episodic. The margin of error is minimal – stresses the employee of the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station.
Quarantine reduction
Quarantine, in turn, is the isolation of a healthy person due to exposure to infection, e.g. after contact with a person suffering from coronavirus. It also applies to people who come to Poland from, inter alia, “special risk” areas. From November 30 to December 13, a 14-day quarantine was imposed on travelers from southern Africa, where the Omikron variant was first detected.
- Moderna or Pfizer? Which booster provides better protection?
Quarantine for someone who lives with someone with COVID-19 and is in home isolation takes this as much to isolate an infected person plus seven days.
– Currently, one can also release from such a quarantine – says Joanna Równiak. – Based on research. The quarantine imposed by the health department on the cohabitants of an infected person can be shortened after a negative result of the test performed after a positive result of a cohabitant of the vaccinated or convicted persons – he explains.
– This test can be performed even on the second day after a positive result of the co-household member – adds Równiak.
