Ilex aquifolium and Ilex opaca with their bright red berries and green ornamental leaves are grown as ornamental plants outside the house. They are used to make Christmas decorations.

The consumption of a small amount of blueberries is rarely associated with high toxicity if the berries are not chewed. Among the symptoms of poisoning are gastroenteritis, diarrhea and vomiting.

Ilex vomitoria, as its botanical name suggests, is a powerful emetic. It should be easily distinguished from the two previous species of holly because its leaf structure is different and the berries are usually yellow.
