Hiroshima cocktail – an explosive mixture of sambuca and absinthe

Half a century ago, Soviet bartenders came up with a cocktail recipe, one portion of which strikes even a trained person on the spot. This highly intoxicating cocktail was given a terrible name – “Hiroshima”. I will teach you how to make it at home. In addition to the original taste, this drink has a beautiful appearance.

Historical reference. The Hiroshima cocktail was invented in the 50s by Soviet bartenders in response to the famous American B-52 cocktail, which was incredibly popular in those years. The appearance of the alcoholic “Hiroshima” resembles a nuclear mushroom that appears after a nuclear explosion, hence the name.

There are several versions of Hiroshima, the ingredients are almost the same everywhere, but the proportions are different. I suggest following the classic recipe.

Composition and proportions:

  • sambuca – 1 part (20 ml);
  • absinthe – 1 part (20 ml);
  • Baileys liquor – 1 part (20 ml);
  • grenadine (pomegranate syrup) – 2-3 drops.

Hiroshima belongs to the group of shooters – alcoholic cocktails that are drunk in one gulp. Therefore, it is better to make small portions. Typically, bars mix no more than 20 ml of each ingredient. As a result, the volume of one serving does not exceed 60 ml. This is the best option.

1. Pour sambuca into a glass.

2. Gently add Baileys liquor in a spoon. It is important that the layers do not mix.

3. Pour absinthe over a spoon.

4. In the middle of the glass, add a few drops of pomegranate syrup. Its density is much higher than that of other components, so grenadine easily breaks through all three layers, forming a visual effect resembling an explosion.

How to drink Hiroshima

1. In one gulp. The easiest and fastest way. After adding the grenadine, we exhale and in one sharp movement we overturn the glass. Almost immediately, warmth is felt throughout the body.

2. Through a straw. We lower the tube to the bottom and gently draw in the drink. The layers are mixed right in the mouth, the taste changes several times.

3. Set fire. The most spectacular way to drink Hiroshima. To bring it to life, you need to set fire to absinthe, wait 20-30 seconds, lower a straw to the bottom of the glass and drink quickly. Hurry is needed here so that the tube does not have time to melt from the high temperature.

With the latter method, I advise you to be extremely careful, since we are dealing with open fire. With all other parameters, you can safely experiment, creating your own version of the cocktail.
