Due to the war in Ukraine and military operations within nuclear power plants, the fear of radioactive radiation in Poland is still high. The National Atomic Energy Agency monitors the radiation level in Poland on an ongoing basis and constantly reassures that there is no threat. The indications do not differ from the norm. The current radiation level for each province can be independently checked via the government website.

Soon after the invasion of Ukraine, fights began at the disused Chernobyl power plant. Soon after, it was captured by the s. Even then, the fear of harmful radiation that could reach our country took its toll on Poles. One of its manifestations was, among others buying Lugol’s fluid from pharmacies (which was administered in our country after the Chernobyl explosion in 1986). Further incidents followed in Ukraine.

In early March, the troops of the Federation shelled a nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, Ukraine. The media circulated a recording showing a fire on the site of the power plant. It may have brought back memories of the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, but the National Atomic Energy Agency reassured that at the time that there was no radiation hazard in Poland.

We were then able to find out from publicly available information that the fire occurred only in the administrative parts of the power plantand not in technology buildings. Meanwhile, Poles went to pharmacies, incl. in search of Lugol’s fluid. Experts constantly emphasized that there was no need to panic.

In the morning after the shelling, the Ukrainian regulator of the International Atomic Energy Agency announced that no changes in radiation levels had been recorded in the vicinity of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. In the following hours, reassuring messages were also given by the Polish authorities.

There is no threat in connection with the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant – assured the Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa on the same day. We are in constant contact with the IAEA, the situation is monitored, there is no threat she added. The head of the National Atomic Energy Agency warned against disinformation.

More than two weeks have passed since that incident, radiation levels are constantly monitored, and no increases have occurred. However, this does not stop Poles’ fears. Therefore, the National Atomic Energy Agency regularly publishes notifications about the lack of radiation hazard for our country.
