Type 2 diabetes is a huge problem in modern medicine

The analysis of over 200 studies showed that herbs used in South Asia are effective in helping people with type 2 diabetes. Many inhabitants of the region have been using such methods for years.

While type 2 diabetes is a pressing problem in the Western world, scientists from the University of Nottingham looked at how traditional Indian medicine – Ayurveda deals with the disease. This system has been used for thousands of years in India and other South Asian countries. It is mainly used by indigenous peoples, people living in rural areas, less affluent, older or strongly identifying with the local tradition.

Some of the herbs used in Ayurveda are also used in other parts of the world, including Mexico and China, the researchers note. Usually, patients report satisfaction with the treatment results.

In addition to natural plant substances, Ayurveda also uses other methods, including special cleansing techniques, diet and lifestyle modifications, and the patient is approached holistically. This system is often used by patients with type 2 diabetes.

Ayurvedic herbs and glucose levels

In Frontiers in Pharmacology, the Nottingham team described the results of the first in-depth analysis of over 200 studies examining the effects of all Ayurvedic herbs used in patients with this disease. They proved to be good at controlling blood glucose levels in patients. At the same time, they also have a positive effect on other parameters, such as cholesterol, body weight and blood pressure.

«It is the first time that the effects of all these remedies have been analyzed so thoroughly on such a large scale. The evidence available today shows the benefits of using many Ayurvedic preparations for glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes, ”says project leader Prof. Kaushik Chattopadhyay.

The expert admits that there is a need, however, to check the described results in more detail. “Given the limitations of available studies – and to strengthen the evidence base – high-quality randomized and controlled studies should be conducted,” he adds.

Scientists have already developed a set of guidelines on how to help patients with type 2 diabetes through traditional Ayurvedic methods. They intend to test the effectiveness of the developed approach
