Heparin ointments have anticoagulant properties. The active substance in these medicines is heparin, which is also found in the body. It is produced by mast cells in the lungs, heart and liver. Responsible for thinning blood, i.e. inhibiting its clotting. Heparin also has anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling properties.

Heparin works locally, i.e. in the form of an ointment, it will act on a specific site. It is worth noting that it has no effect on already clotted blood. Heparin will not dissolve blood clots and will be effective in preventing them.

Heparin ointment – indications

Heparin ointment is recommended for people who:

  1. have phlebitis (including thrombophlebitis), varicose veins,
  2. have subcutaneous hematomas, swelling or bruises,
  3. they want to prevent or heal scars and keloids.

Heparin ointment – contraindications

The main contraindication is hypersensitivity to heparin or to another component of a particular ointment. Often they are methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoates, so people allergic to parabens should not use heparin ointment. The drug should also not be used on cuts, wounds, irritated skin for unknown reasons, and on mucous membranes and around the eyes. Additionally, the substance cannot be taken orally.

Particular caution should be exercised in people with hemorrhagic diathesis. People with known or suspected bleeding tendencies should consult a doctor before using the ointment. The preparation should not be used for a long time as it may result in skin hypersensitivity.

Pregnant and lactating women can use heparin ointments, but only after consulting a doctor. No negative effects on the fetus or food have been identified. However, you should not use any medications on your own during pregnancy.

In situations where the patient is taking other medications, especially other anticoagulants, please inform your doctor immediately. Taking too much heparin or applying it to too large an area of ​​the body can cause a hemorrhage.

Heparin ointment – dosage

Heparin ointment is applied topically. Depending on the composition of a particular ointment, it is used 1-3 times a day. The daily dose should not be exceeded as it may cause side effects.

The ointment should be spread on washed and dried skin, and then rubbed in for 1-2 minutes. Wash your hands after applying the cream to prevent the ointment from getting into your eyes or mouth.
