What is eye hemorrhage
Hemorrhage in the eye is an accumulation of blood that flows into the eye from damaged intraocular vessels. For example, after certain diseases or physical exercises – especially when a person did not play sports and decided to start abruptly with heavy loads.
Causes of hemorrhage in the eye in adults
As told ophthalmologist Alexander Trubilin, the causes of hemorrhage in the eye can be completely different, and this is due to the localization of the hemorrhage:
- hemorrhage under the conjunctiva;
- into the anterior chamber of the eye;
- into the cavity of the eye – the vitreous body;
- into the retina.
Hemorrhage under the conjunctiva occurs spontaneously while taking various anticoagulants, with an increase in blood pressure, traumatic damage to the conjunctiva, severe coughing or sneezing.
Hemorrhage in the anterior chamber of the eye (hyphema) occurs due to trauma, eye surgery, complications of concomitant eye diseases.
Hemorrhage into the vitreous body (hemophthalmos) is a complication of diabetes mellitus, trauma, retinal breaks and its detachment, age-related detachment of the vitreous body.
In the retina – age-related macular degeneration, diabetes mellitus, vascular thrombosis on the retina.
Symptoms of hemorrhage in the eye in adults
The main symptoms of hemorrhage in the eye are as follows:
- the image is blurry;
- the image splits into two
- there is pressure in the eye;
- visual acuity decreases.
What drops to drip for hemorrhage in the eye in adults
There are drops that have a vasoconstrictive effect. They also have the effect of repairing damaged vessels.
Emoxipine. These drops increase the elasticity and strength of the capillary walls in the eye, and have a vasoconstrictive effect. It is advisable to use drops as prescribed by a doctor, and not to self-medicate. According to doctors, the course of treatment can range from 3 weeks to 3 months.
Potassium iodide 3%. This is an antimicrobial drug that resolves hemorrhage, restores capillaries. But in no case should it be used by those who have hypersensitivity to iodine, problems with the thyroid gland.
Diclofenac. It has an anti-inflammatory property, can often solve the problem in 1-2 weeks.
Defislez. The drug dissolves and regenerates eye tissue.
Vizin. Drops eliminate intraocular hemorrhages and irritations.
Treatment of hemorrhage in the eye in adults
First of all, you need to stop the bleeding that has arisen. Next, the doctor will send you for a general blood test, which can indicate the true cause of the hemorrhage in the eye.
Blood can resolve on its own, without intervention, but doctors often prescribe absorbable drugs.
Sometimes you may need surgery – vitrectomy. It is indicated when retinal hemorrhages occur. Surgeons first partially or completely remove the vitreous body, and then the blood clots.
Diagnostics
It is important not to delay the visit to the doctor and seek help as soon as possible. An ophthalmologist examines the eye with an ophthalmoscope.
In case of hemorrhage, the doctor will prescribe a general blood test, its results will be able to indicate the true cause of the pathology.
If the hemorrhage is moderate, no serious diseases have been identified in the body, then the patient is recommended to rest, to refrain from exertion.
Modern treatments
– An ophthalmologist will definitely examine the retina in conditions of an enlarged pupil in search of the cause of the hemorrhage. And depending on the causes and degree of hemophthalmia, treatment will be prescribed. This can be a therapeutic treatment, laser or microsurgical, in which, in cases of total hemophthalmia, the entire altered vitreous body with blood is removed, and vision returns, – says ophthalmologist Alexander Trubilin.
Specific therapy will depend on the type of hemorrhage.
Hemorrhage under the conjunctiva. Usually this type of hemorrhage does not require treatment and resolves on its own in 7 to 10 days. But a visit to an ophthalmologist should not be postponed, since only a doctor can determine the cause and recommend an additional examination.
Hemorrhage in the anterior chamber of the eye (hyphema). This type requires immediate contact with an ophthalmologist. With a small and medium level of hyphema, drug therapy is prescribed, which accelerates the resorption of blood. And with extensive or total hyphema, surgery will be recommended.
Hemorrhage into the vitreous body (hemophthalmos). In this condition, patients note a decrease in vision, the appearance of haze, shroud. Some note the appearance of floating opacities – “flies”. Hemophthalmia requires an immediate appeal to an ophthalmologist, depending on the causes and degree of hemophthalmia, treatment will be prescribed. This can be a therapeutic treatment, laser or microsurgical, in which, in cases of total hemophthalmia, all the altered vitreous body with blood is removed.
Into the retina. This type of hemorrhage is very dangerous because it affects the most important structure of the eye – the retina. Patients notice the consequences of hemorrhage only in the central region. When a blur appears in front of your eyes. Wherever the eye goes, it will stay in place. The size of this spot directly corresponds to the extent of the hemorrhage in the central region. Treatment consists in the normalization of the underlying disease (diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension). Special injections can also be prescribed, which are made by an ophthalmologist in an operating room.
Prevention of hemorrhage in the eye in adults at home
“It is important to see a doctor on time,” he advises. ophthalmologist Alexander Trubilin. – Systematic observation by an ophthalmologist with an examination of the fundus of patients at risk (patients with diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, high myopia) allows early detection of initial, small hemorrhages on the surface of the retina, which are invisible to the patient. Thereby allowing to prevent a big trouble for sight. Also, examination of the fundus provides valuable information for colleagues – endocrinologists, therapists, cardiologists, neurologists.
