Hemorrhoids, or haemorrhoids, is a concept that we associate with a painful, embarrassing anus. In fact, hemorrhoids are physiological structures – protrusions filled with blood that help control the faecal excretion process. When we talk about hemorrhoids, we mean their pathological condition, which is a hemorrhoidal disease.
Unfortunately, it is an increasingly common problem today – it is favored by, among other things, a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity and improper diet. These and other factors (e.g. pregnancy, lesions, old age at which connective tissue atrophy occurs) lead to inflammation of the hemorrhoids, painful clots may form in them, and in more advanced stages of the disease the nodules fall out of the anus and after some time can no longer be put back in. It is worth applying appropriate treatment earlier and preventing the development of such an advanced condition. Both oral medications (mainly preparations sealing the walls of blood vessels, e.g. diosmin, rutin, extracts of horse chestnut, ruscus, grapevine) and topical ointments and suppositories play an important role in the treatment. One of the over-the-counter preparations is Hemorol suppositories.
What is Hemorol?
Hemorol is a herbal medicine in the form of rectal suppositories. One package contains 12 suppositories. The manufacturer of the drug is Herbapol Wrocław. Hemorol suppositories can be classified as drugs with anti-hemorrhoidal, anti-inflammatory and blood vessel protection properties.
Composition and action of the drug Hemorol
Hemorol are herbal suppositories containing active substances such as dense extracts of chamomile flower (Chamomilla recutita), nettle root (Atropa belladonna), broom herb (Cytisus sp.), Horse chestnut bark (Aesculus hippocastanum), cinquefoil rhizome (Potentilla tormentilla) and yarrow herb (Achillea millefolium). The herbal composition composed in this way ensures the presence of anti-inflammatory substances (e.g. chamazulene from chamomile), tightening and strengthening the walls of blood vessels (e.g. horse chestnut) and relaxing (e.g. hives). In addition to the natural ingredients, suppositories also contain a substance called benzocaine, which is a typical topical pain reliever. This composition allows you to significantly alleviate the symptoms of hemorrhoidal disease, such as itching, pain, burning, redness or minor bleeding.
Contraindications to the use of the drug Hemorol
Hemorol cannot be used in case of hypersensitivity to any of its components, especially benzocaine and herbs from the Asteraceae family. People who are allergic to any herbs should be especially careful and watch for allergic reactions after using Hemorol. Moreover, cancer of the large intestine should be ruled out, as Hemorol suppositories should not be used in this case as well.
Hemorol should not be used by children and adolescents under 18 years of age. It is also not recommended to use Hemorol suppositories during pregnancy, especially since the herbs they contain may affect the contractility of the uterus.
Rectal bleeding may be a side effect – if such a symptom is noted after using the drug, the suppositories should be discontinued and a doctor should be consulted urgently. In addition, due to the presence of benzocaine, a disease called methaemoglobinaemia can occur – instead of hemoglobin (the red blood pigment that carries oxygen), methaemoglobinaemia is produced, which cannot carry oxygen. A typical symptom is then hypoxia (resulting in e.g. fatigue, dizziness) and then cyanosis.
Side effects, in addition to hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. allergy) and methaemoglobinaemia, may also include disorders of the immune (immune) system. If any disturbing symptoms appear after taking Hemorol, discontinue the drug immediately and consult your doctor.
How is Hemorol used?
The suppository should be removed from the foil blister and inserted into the rectum, preferably in the supine position (it is most convenient to apply the suppository at night after going to bed). Usually it is used once a day, but in more advanced stages of hemorrhoidal disease, it can be used 2 to 3 times a day. Treatment with Hemorol suppositories should last 7 days. If there is no improvement after this time, consultation with a doctor is necessary, preferably with a specialist – a proctologist (i.e. a specialized surgeon dealing with diseases of the large intestine and rectum).
