Help baby burp

Why do babies burp?

Burping allows toddlers toevacuate the air he has swallowed at the same time as he sucks. It’s mechanical because his digestive system is not quite mature yet. In addition, he may have drunk too quickly, swallowing too much air at the same time as his milk.

Rot: what is the right position?

The easiest way is to pick up the infant by carrying it very high on our arm, all against our bust. The goal is to reassure him by our presence, while clearing the air route in his respiratory tract. He should be held upright, taking care to support his head with our hand so that it does not toss around. We do not forget to place a bib on our shoulder: burping may be accompanied by a little discharge of milk.

What if the baby doesn’t burp, is it serious?

Not at all. It just means that he is not suffering from an overflow of air in his stomach. We still wait a bit before going back to bed, it is safer and more comfortable for him.

When should the baby burp?

It all depends on the babies. Corn most infants burp after drinking all of their bottles. However, some need to make a small stop along the way. We can see it very well: the baby begins by rejecting the pacifier with a movement of his tongue, he turns his head in sign of refusal, and may even start to cry. In this case, we take a break, raising it slightly in a sitting position, but not curled up on itself so as not to block the digestive tract.

Are multiple burps possible?

Yes, there are times when an infant needs to emit one or two burps during a feed. Depending on the speed at which he drinks, depending on the more or less lying position in which he takes his meal, but also the maturity of his digestive system. He may also just need to take… his time.

How do you know that the baby is bothered by a burp that does not come?

He whines, wriggles in all directions and generally refuses to take the bottle again. In this case, we start by raising it to a semi-seated position (by supporting the neck well) and we wait a few moments. And he was later offered to continue.

Does a breastfed baby also have to burp?

Breastfed newborns are less affected by the phenomenon of burping because when breastfeeding, they swallow less air than when they drink from a bottle, even if the nipple is of very good quality. Indeed, when the baby is positioned correctly in front of the nipple, his mouth perfectly conforms to the shape of the breast, and the air hardly passes. That said, more and more bottle manufacturers are marketing pacifiers that best mimic the shape of the mother’s breast. As a result, burping problems should subside a bit with their use.

How long to wait between burping and the end of the feed?

Usually burp occurs within 20 minutes maximum, after the meal. Better not to lay it down again before. Instead, we take the opportunity to babble with him by carrying him in our arms!

Can we go back to bed a baby who has not burped?

Did we wait together for almost half an hour? Baby looks perfectly peaceful, sated, calm and ready to fall asleep in our arms? It seems then that he does not need to expel air after feeding that day. We can put it back to bed without worry. On the other hand, if he seems agitated, grumpy, we still keep him a little close to us. We try to calm him down by talking to him softly, by caressing his face, by rocking him… The burp will surely come eventually.
