Heart failure in the eyes of the patient – Medonet session during the XXVIII International Cardiology Conference

On Friday, May 28, the last day of this year’s edition of the XXVIII International Cardiology Conference “Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung and vascular diseases”, there will be two special sessions organized jointly by the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, Sans Souci Konferencje and the editorial team of Medonet. Everything will be broadcast on the Internet, including via Facebook.

The first session will start at 9:00 am and is entitled “Heart failure in the eyes of the patient – debate“. The hosts will be Dr. Anna Zimny-Zając, editor-in-chief of Medonet, and prof. Piotr Rozentryt from the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases, member of the Board of Heart Failure of the Polish Cardiac Society. The group of experts will include prof. Jadwiga Nessler – Coordinator of the Comprehensive Patient Care Program in Heart Failure on behalf of PTK, prof. Przemysław Leszek – Chairman of the PCS Heart Failure Section, prof. Michał Zembala – Department of Cardiac Surgery, Lung and Heart Transplantation SCCS and Krystyna Czapla, MSc – Department of Cardiology SCCS.

Cardiovascular diseases are the biggest killer of Poles. According to the report “The health situation of the Polish population and its conditions 2020”, heart disease is by far the most common cause of death among cardiovascular diseases, while cerebrovascular diseases constitute the second group. The 2021 National Health Test of Poles by Medonet, attended by over 340 Poles indicated that currently every fourth adult Pole (25%) suffers from arterial hypertension, while one in ten suffers from heart disease (ischemic heart disease / heart valve defect / heart failure / atrial fibrillation). In both cases, the number of patients increases significantly with age. Hence the focus on heart failure as the main topic of the session – a disease which, despite its inconvenience, does not necessarily mean giving up your passions or plans.

The following issues will be discussed during the session:

  1. Patient-doctor communication. What symptoms could indicate a heart problem? How is heart failure diagnosed?
  2. Difficulties in the disease – chronicity, nuisance and exacerbation. How should patients approach this disease on a daily basis? How can they cope with these nuisances? When are we talking about exacerbation of the disease?
  3. Heart failure and everyday life and passions. Can heart failure exclude us from work? What activities should we avoid? When suffering from heart failure, do we have to give up our passions, e.g. playing sports?
  4. Motherhood and heart failure. Does heart failure preclude the possibility of having a baby?
  5. Heart failure and depression. How important is the support of psychologists and psychiatrists in this disease? How often is depression accompanying heart failure?

The second special session, which will start at 10:15 am, is entitled “Pocovid syndrome. How to rebuild the cardiological health of Poles“. The session will be led by Dr. Anna Zimny-Zając from Medonet and prof. Mariusz Gąsior – Head of the XNUMXrd Department and Clinical Department of Cardiology SUM / SCCS in Zabrze, and the experts will be prof. Tomasz Hryniewiecki – Director of the National Institute of Cardiology of Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński in Warsaw -Anina – chairman of the Cardiology Council at the Ministry of Health, prof. Tomasz Grodzicki – Vice-Rector for Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University, prof. Zbigniew Kalarus – Head of the Department of Cardiology, Congenital Heart Defects and Electrotherapy, Medical University of Silesia, prof. Marian Zembala – CEO of SCCS in Zabrze and prof. Przemysław Mitkowski – President of the PTK Elect.

The fight against COVID-19 does not end after the disease is passed or even after the patient is discharged from the hospital, if he was hospitalized for it. It turns out that the effects of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus can bother us for many months and in some cases be even more dangerous than COVID-19 itself. Therefore, during the session, the conversation will focus on pocovid syndrome, which can lead to serious health problems and, in extreme cases, even death. Here is a list of issues that will be covered:

  1. Prolonged COVID-19 (ongoing symptomatic COVID-19) and post-COVID-19 syndrome – how are these units different?
  2. How many percent of patients are affected by the problem of pocovid syndrome?
  3. What are the risk factors for developing pocovid syndrome?
  4. Pocovid symptoms. Which of them are the most common? Which of them are the most dangerous?
  5. What tests should be performed after COVID-19 and when?
  6. What cardiovascular symptoms can appear with pocovid syndrome
  7. What can the consequences of the pocovid syndrome, especially cardiovascular, be if we ignore the disturbing symptoms?
  8. Is hospitalization necessary for the postovid syndrome?
  9. How long should we take care of our cardiac health after suffering from COVID-19 or the pocovid syndrome?

During special sessions, in addition to the discussion with the participation of the lecturers and experts, questions prepared by the readers of Medonet’s editorial office will also be asked. We would like to remind you – sessions organized jointly by the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, Sans Souci Conferences and the Medonet editorial team will be broadcast on the Internet, including on Facebook. We invite you to participate.
