Choosing the color of the paint is usually the most difficult step when you plan to refresh your apartment. However, is this the only thing worth paying attention to?

You can also be eco when you paint your house. Create a harmonious and healthy interior for yourself and your loved ones with the help of ecological and healthy wall paints.

What to look for when buying interior paints?

First of all, the paint should match the function of the room. It is important that the paints are vapor-permeable. Thanks to this property, the walls will regulate the humidity of the air in the room. We should always pay attention to paint composition, and the VOC parameter.

VOC – volatile organic compounds

The most important thing is the content of harmful volatile organic compounds. It is abbreviated as VOC or VOC. Since 2010, the VOC content in the European Union is a maximum of 30 g per liter of paint. If we choose paints for painting walls in an allergy sufferer’s room or we are looking for safe paints for the living room, it is worth finding products with a minimum VOC content. There are paints available for purchase with even six times lower content than the standard, and some even with the amount of VOC close to zero. Information on the VOC content should be placed on each paint package. Of course, the low VOC content does not make the paint completely healthy. It is worth checking the full composition of the product before buying.

Ecological labels on paints

We choose paints marked with an international mark (certificate) awarded by independent research institutions. The most recognizable eco-label in the European Union is the ECOLABEL technology for the production of paints and varnishes. It stands for environmentally friendly. Healthy and ecological paints are tested at every stage of their use before being certified. Others awarded decorations for healthy paints to np.:

  1. Blue Angel – awarded in Germany and Scandinavia,
  2. TÜV SÜD – paint produced in accordance with ecological requirements, does not endanger human health;
  3. ELF badge – minimum VOC content in the paint,
  4. certificate of the Polish Society of Allergology or TÜV NORD label – the paint is designed for allergy sufferers, hypoallergenic, does not irritate or sensitize.

Healthy paints with nanoparticles

Non-toxic wall paints often contain nanoparticles. Thanks to the use of nanotechnology, it is possible to reduce the amount of formaldehyde that is released by the equipment. Up to 98% of formaldehyde can be neutralized. The paint works by trapping the formaldehyde from the air and transforming it into invisible water vapor particles which, thanks to the natural air circulation, are removed to the outside. The paints do not lose their properties even after a long time after painting.

Are also available paints with silver, gold or titanium nanoparticlesthat effectively destroy harmful microorganisms. They will protect rooms against the development of mold fungi. Products containing titanium dioxide have the ability to neutralize odors, e.g. of tobacco. For rooms with a lot of electronic devices, it is best to use paints that neutralize the effects of electromagnetic smog.

Allergy room – which paints to choose?

To paint a room where an allergic person will often stay, use paints with antistatic properties. A good choice will be paints recommended by the Polish Society of Allergology, as well as paints marked with the Blue Angel or EU Flower logo.

How are healthy paints different from others?

Producers of healthy paints limit the content of substances harmful to human health and the environment, including VOCs. They eliminate harmful substances already at the production stage, e.g. sulfur or heavy metals. Healthy paints reduce air pollution with solvents and the amount of hazardous waste in by-products. These products have high covering capacity, abrasion resistance as well as water and adhesion resistance. It is less often necessary to renovate walls in an apartment. After a simple calculation, it will turn out a bit more expensive ecological paints in fact, they will cost us less. Additionally, we will be able to be calmer for our health and that of our loved ones.
