Research for women over 50

Each of us, regardless of age, should perform a basic package of tests once a year, including general urine analysis, blood count, glucose, ESR and cholesterol. The results of these tests allow for an overall assessment of the patient’s health.

However, the older we get, the more tests should be on the list as mandatory for regular testing. For women over 50, these will be the following tests.

  1. FSH. Follitropin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Its task is to accelerate the maturation of follicles in the first phase of the menstrual cycle. This is why, thanks to the FSH test, we can find out the cause of the disappearance or irregularity of menstruation. For greatest reliability, the test is performed between days 2 and 5 of the cycle. The normal result in the FSH test is between 3-12mIU / ml. If the result is lower, it is a malfunction of the pituitary gland, an infection, or a tumor. A high result above 18mIU / l indicates entering the period of menopause. The cost of the test is about PLN 25.
  2. Estradiol. Estradiol is a female sex hormone. Produced by the ovaries, it largely affects a woman’s mood and libido. It is performed to check if ovulation in a woman’s body is occurring and is proceeding normally. Therefore, the test is performed between the 12th and 14th day of the cycle, which is the period when ovulation should occur. During ovulation, the level of estradiol should be between 13 and 330 pg / ml, while when a woman enters the menopause, the level of the hormone drops sharply, with its maximum concentration being 42 pg / ml. The cost of the test is about PLN 25.
  3. Total calcium. Since one of the effects of menopause may be the weakening of bone tissue and the development of osteoporosis, it is very important to examine the health of your bones. For this purpose, among others, blood calcium level test. Calcium is the basic building block of bones and teeth, and is also essential for the proper functioning of muscles and the blood clotting process. Hypocalcaemia, i.e. too low calcium levels in the blood, can be caused by hypoparathyroidism, bone, nervous system and kidney diseases. Performing a total calcium test costs about PLN 10.
  4. Morphology. It is the most commonly performed blood diagnostic test. Its results allow the assessment of the functioning of the whole organism, as well as confirmation or exclusion of infections and other diseases. While performing the description of the results, the laboratory technician assesses, inter alia, the number of red and white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin concentration and other parameters necessary for the doctor to create a complete picture of the state of the body. Remember that the test results should be analyzed only by a doctor who will take into account all factors, such as the patient’s age or past illnesses. The cost of the examination is approximately PLN 12.
  5. OB. Biernacki’s reaction is a test that allows you to assess your health in terms of the development of possible infections. In order to be able to determine ESR, the rate of sinking of red blood cells over a specific time period is assessed. In women over 50, it is up to 30 mm per hour. If it is elevated, it may indicate anemia, rheumatic disease, cirrhosis or a bacterial infection. On the other hand, too low ESR may indicate circulatory failure, jaundice or allergic diseases. The cost of the test is about PLN 8.
  6. Urinalysis. Just 20 ml of urine is enough to be able to assess the condition of the body and the functioning of its organs. As part of the urinalysis, factors such as color and clarity, pH, specific gravity, and the presence of leukocytes, erythrocytes, spindles, and crystals are assessed. The urine is also tested for the presence of protein that may indicate cancer. Similar to morphology, only the evaluation of all parameters of the urine test will allow the evaluation of the functioning of the bladder, kidneys and urinary system. Its cost is about PLN 12.
  7. Fasting glucose. Glucose is the greatest source of energy in the human body. Therefore, having too much or too little of it can be very dangerous to your health. We talk about the correct concentration of glucose when its result obtained from the blood taken from the patient is within the limits of 70-99 mg / dl. If the result is lower, it may indicate liver dysfunction, deficiency of thyroid hormones or stomach cancer. On the other hand, the result significantly exceeding 99 mg / dl may indicate the development of diabetes, pancreatic diseases or Cushing’s syndrome. The cost of the test is about PLN 10.
  8. Urea. Testing the concentration of urea in the blood allows you to assess the condition and proper functioning of the kidneys. However, in order for its result to give a complete picture necessary for diagnosis, the urea test should be performed together with the creatinine test. The normal concentration of urea in the blood is 15-40 mg / dl. Too high urea level may indicate kidney dysfunction, dehydration or cancer. Too low urea concentration in adults is very rare, and most often it is caused by polyuria, a disease characterized by increased urine output. The cost of blood urea testing is about PLN 10.
  9. Creatinine. Like urea, creatinine is a chemical that can be used to assess the condition of the kidneys. In a healthy person, creatinine is filtered through the kidneys and then excreted in the urine. In sick people, excess creatinine is stored in the blood, therefore the serum is the subject of tests to determine the level of creatinine. Its correct level should be within the limits of 0,6-1,3 mg / dl. Increased levels may indicate kidney failure or ketoacidosis. In turn, low concentrations are most often observed in people who are on long-term fasts and in those with low muscle mass. The cost of a creatinine test is about PLN 10.
  10. Lipidogram. It is a test that in women over 50 should be performed regularly, every few months. Its result allows you to determine the fat balance in the body. Thanks to this, it is possible to determine the risk of diseases such as atherosclerosis or heart attack. The lipidogram is an assessment of three parameters – total cholesterol (norm <200 mg / dl), LDL cholesterol, called bad cholesterol (norm <115 mg / dl) and triglycerides (norm <150 mg / dl). Abnormal results may indicate problems with the kidneys, liver, and pancreas. Very often they also indicate an incorrect, too fatty diet. The test of the lipidogram in the blood is about PLN 40.
