A study by researchers at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami sheds new light on the long-term effects of the coronavirus disease. It turns out that SARS-CoV-2 may affect male potency, and perhaps also fertility.

  1. Miami scientists tested penis samples from recovering erectile dysfunction patients
  2. They found that SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the tissues and that the vascular endothelium that lines the penis was impaired
  3. According to researchers, the virus may cause recovery problems in survivors

SARS-CoV-2 in the penises of healers. They had erection problems

The blood vessels in the penis, like other vessels in the body, line the cells of the vascular endothelium. If its functioning is disturbed, health problems arise.

Researchers from the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami decided to check if there was any connection between erection problems and SARS-CoV-2 infection. For this purpose, they took tissue samples from the penises of men who decided to undergo prosthesis implantation (due to potency disorders). The patients were convalescents, one of them had to be hospitalized due to the severe course of the disease.

– Our study shows that COVID-19 causes multi-system dysfunction of the vascular endothelium that extend far beyond the lungs or kidneys. COVID-19 reaches the endothelium and through it affects many organs, including the penis, explains lead author of the study, Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy.

Tissues from two patients who had not been infected with COVID-19 were also collected for the study. It turned out that in the case of convalescents, SARS-CoV-2 was still present in the tissues, although at least six months have passed since the infection. What’s more, scientists also found endothelial dysfunction in them. In men who did not have coronavirus infection, such dysfunctions were not found.

“The results suggest that all men who have had SARS-CoV-2 infection should be aware of the potential consequences for their sexual performance,” says Dr. Ramasamy. – If they have erection problems, they should see a doctor.

The same team has previously tried to determine if COVID-19 affects male reproductive organs. The researchers then discovered SARS-CoV-2 in the testicular tissues of some convalescents. Scientists believe their analyzes could provide answers about the effects of the coronavirus on male fertility. A separate question is whether the virus can be sexually transmitted. This is not known yet.

Long COVID. What symptoms can it have?

Long COVID is one of the terms for ailments that can occur in people who have been infected with the coronavirus. After the infection is overcome, healers can still get sick.

– The study conducted by the Department of Family Medicine, Medical University of Łódź, available at symptycovid.pl, shows that as much as 20 percent people admitted that their health did not return to the state it was before the disease – said in March Dr. Paweł Lewek, family doctor from the Le-Med clinic in Łódź. – So it can be estimated that long COVID affects one in five patients.

The symptoms of long-term COVID are most often non-specific. These include chronic fatigue, problems with concentration, headaches, joint pain, changes in the sense of smell and taste, irritability, hearing problems, hair loss or shortness of breath. But long COVID is also more serious diseases, such as hypothyroidism, heart rhythm disturbances, problems with pressure.

– Since the follow-up period for COVID-19 is just over a year, it is currently impossible to say how long the symptoms of long COVID last. They can even be over 12 months – said Dr. Lewek in March.

As he explained in the program “Onet Rano.” prof. Andrzej Fal, the so-called fatigue syndrome, i.e. the feeling that it has not fully regained its strength and condition, 6 months after passing COVID-19 is accompanied by up to 60% of convalescents. He also talked about other ailments.
