Headaches as a result of changes in the neck and nape are associated with degenerative changes (most often), traumatic or are the result of the prolapse of the gelatinous nucleus (disc) of the intervertebral disc of the spine.

Such pains are usually accompanied by neck and face pains and dizziness. These pains usually occur between the ages of 40 and 60, usually at night (especially in the morning), and the patient usually describes them as pains traveling from the nape to the back of the head. Sometimes they radiate to different parts of the face.

Characteristic of these ailments is that they usually begin when performing activities that require a longer tilt of the head back (e.g. while hanging underwear, fixing a lamp to the ceiling). Quite often they are associated with general symptoms of menopause in women (“flushes” to the head, mental lability, sleep disturbances, etc.) and with atherosclerosis or hypertensive disease. The occurrence or intensification of these pains at night, in the supine position, is explained by the unfavorable position of the cervical spine.
