Pregnancy is a great time in a woman’s life, despite the fact that sometimes there are some difficulties. Within nine months, the well-being of the expectant mother can deteriorate for a variety of reasons, at the same time, it is extremely undesirable to take various medications. One of the most common health problems is migraine.

Headaches during pregnancy

Migraine is called a severe headache that appears in attacks, often characterized by one-sided and throbbing pain. An attack can last for several hours or several days. Migraines are often aggravated by increased sensitivity to bright light and noise. Headaches like these are not uncommon during pregnancy.

The reasons for migraines are different:

  • stress and increased nervous tension,
  • changeable weather,
  • lack of sleep,
  • stuffy and stale air,
  • overeating or overusing certain foods (cheeses, fish, chocolate, nuts),
  • hormonal phenomena.

Some women have a headache during ovulation and menstruation, and during pregnancy they forget about it. Others did not know what a headache was until they began to prepare for a new addition to the family. If migraine attacks appeared or changed during pregnancy, then their nature is hormonal.

If the head hurts especially badly during pregnancy, while the migraine is accompanied by nausea, darkening or flashes in the eyes, then you should definitely consult a doctor and check for the following diagnoses:

  • tendency to vasospasm and blood pressure surges,
  • intracranial pressure,
  • hypertension,
  • kidney problems
  • heart diseases,
  • tendency to vascular thrombosis.

Perhaps migraine is one of the manifestations of gestosis – this is how toxicosis is called in the last stages of pregnancy

How to get rid of a headache during pregnancy

Since it is better not to take medications during pregnancy, if the headache is tolerable, try to just ignore it. Get distracted by reading a book, go for a walk, you can take a warm shower, this is good for relaxing. If you haven’t gotten enough sleep, then a nap can help.

Learn to give yourself a scalp massage. This is an excellent remedy that can help even with severe pain. If someone close to you can help, ask them to give you a head and shoulder massage. This is perhaps one of the best remedies for dealing with migraines while you are pregnant.

When the headache becomes completely unbearable, then you cannot do without medication. Paracetamol is usually referred to as relatively safe. Just in case, consult your doctor, let him advise you on the medicine that you can take in your case. It is advisable to do this even before the headaches begin to bother you, so that, in which case, you already have the necessary pills at hand. Ibuprofen is a good remedy, but it cannot be taken for a long time, and it is also undesirable at the onset of the last trimester.
