A 63-year-old American girl suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It is a dangerous disease that causes cardiac arrest, and doctors have implanted her with a cardioverter. They were very surprised when, after almost 20 years, they checked how many times the device saved the patient’s life.
- Almost 20 years ago, an American woman was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is an abnormality in the heart muscle
- The doctors’ decision to implant the woman with a cardioverter saved her life

Cardioverter saved her life ten times
This determined the further course of treatment. The medics implanted the then 44-year-old cardioverter-defibrillator. According to the data published on the sciencedirect.com portal, it was a bull’s eye.
Cardioverter-defibrillator — how it’s working?
A cardioverter-defibrillator is a device whose dimensions resemble a matchbox. Its task is to stop a life-threatening arrhythmia and restore sinus rhythm by sending electrical impulses to the heart. Its originator is Mieczysław Mirowski, a cardiologist from Poland.
The device in 19 years saved a woman’s life ten times. For the first time, a machine made it easier for a woman’s heart to work after 17 months. Five “interventions” occurred during sleep. It is unclear if she noticed them herself, since most patients do not register these types of events while they are asleep. After reading the data from the microprocessor, it turned out that the patient’s heart “stopped” for the longest time for 18 seconds.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – what is it?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetically determined disease characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy. It is unclear what causes it. It can affect any age group, and it tends to affect young people of both sexes.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – treatment
The current state of medical knowledge does not allow for effective treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Therapy consists in relieving symptoms and administering drugs that affect blood clotting.
