Kim był dr Michiaki Takahashi?

Michiaki Takahashi was born on February 17, 1928 in Osaka, Japan. After studying medicine at the University of Osaka, he started working at the University’s Microbiological Research Institute. In his work, he focused on measles and polio viruses. When his son became seriously ill with chickenpox in the 60s, the doctor started working to combat this dangerous disease.

To this end, Dr. Takahashi returned to Japan with a research fellowship in the United States. It was 1965 and the doctor began growing live, weakened chickenpox viruses in animal and human tissues. The work took a long time, because it was not until 1974 that a scientist developed the first vaccine against the varicella virus that causes this disease.

Takahashi’s vaccine has been given to millions of children around the world as an effective measure to prevent severe cases of contagious disease and its transmission. In 1986, the Research Foundation of Microbial Diseases at the University of Osaka began rolling out in Japan as the only varicella vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Michiaki Takahashi became the director of the Microbiological Research Group at the University of Osaka in 1994 and worked there until his retirement. He died on December 16, 2013.
