Have you been bitten by a tick? The most important thing is to remove it as soon as possible, without crushing and smearing it with anything, and then sprinkle it with alcohol (this will accelerate its death). After all, however, do not throw the tick into the trash – send it to scientists from the University of Warsaw. Thanks to this, you will take part in free research. What are they supposed to serve? We explain in the text.
Have you been bitten by a tick? Take part in a free study – check if he was a carrier of Lyme disease
Anyone who finds a tick on them (stuck in the skin) can take part in the study. After the intruder has been removed, it can be sent by post or delivered in person to the AmerLab Laboratory for the Diagnostics of Parasitic and Zoonotic Infections. Until dispatch or visit to the facility, the tick can be stored in a refrigerator in a tightly closed container. What’s all this for?
Scientists will check whether the tick that has bitten you is the carrier of Borrelia spirochetes, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Testing as many ticks as possible will help to elucidate the mechanisms that influence the transmission of the pathogen from ticks to humans. Participation in the study is free of charge (note, only adults can participate in it).
The analyzes are carried out as part of the research project of the National Science Center. They are carried out by the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw in cooperation with the Medical University of Warsaw.
Free tick test – what conditions must be met?
The condition for participation in the study is:
1.delivery of the removed tick (by mail or in person) along with the completed test order and informed consent to participate in the research to the Laboratory of Diagnostics of Parasitic and Odzwierzęczych AmerLab Sp. z o. o
2. completing two short questionnaires (on-line): the first one within three days of tick removal and the second one within 8-10 weeks of tick removal.
The waiting time for the test result is a maximum of 10 working days.
It is worth remembering that the examination of the presence of Borrelia spirochetes in ticks is not the same as the diagnostic examination of Lyme disease in humans. Even if the genetic material of the bacteria is found in the tick, it does not mean that we have definitely contracted Lyme disease.
Prophylactic examinations after a tick bite are an essential element of early diagnosis of Lyme disease. To diagnose or rule out Lyme disease, you can perform laboratory tests prepared by POLMED.
Scientists recall that “I care about the risk of transmitting Borrelia spirochetes from ticks to hosts. in since the tick is feeding ». And detection of infection with diagnostic tests using human blood is possible only four to six weeks after the tick bite.
Details on participation in the study can be found at amerlab.pl
