Scientists announce that Sweden may already have defeated the coronavirus by reaching its herd immunity threshold. The only European country that did not close at the start of the pandemic now has the lowest number of infections since March.
- Epidemiologist prof. Kim Sneppen says Sweden has overcome the epidemic. “There is evidence that the Swedes have already built a level of immunity that, combined with additional preventive measures, will stop transmission,” he said.
- The epidemic in Sweden seems to be stabilized – in mid-September Sweden had an average of 23 infections per day per million inhabitants, compared with 61 in Denmark and 20 in Norway

‘With the lockdown removed, Sweden will avoid a second wave of the pandemic,’ says Professor Kim Sneppen, one of Denmark’s leading epidemiologists at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen.
In an interview with the newspaper Politiken, Sneppen even stated that the country has already defeated the coronavirus. He said: “There is evidence that the Swedes have already built up a level of immunity that, combined with additional preventive measures, will stop transmission. It is sufficient to control COVID-19 ».
– Most likely the epidemic in Sweden has died down – he added. – The virus is gone. At least that’s what the news got to me.
Recall that Sneppen is the co-author of the model describing the course of the pandemic in Sweden and Denmark, which emphasizes the importance of “super-carriers”, ie a small group of people who contribute to disproportionately high transmission of the virus within the population.

At the outset of the pandemic, Sweden was criticized for being five times more fatal than Denmark in terms of coronavirus deaths. It was also 10 times higher than its neighbors – in Norway and Finland. The daily death toll peaked there in April at 115 (most of the victims were nursing home residents). Currently, the average weekly number of deaths from COVID-19 is 0.
According to the data collected by OurWorldinData, in mid-september, Sweden recorded an average of 23 infections per day per million inhabitants, compared with 61 in Denmark and 20 in Norway.
As of September 29, a total of 92 cases of SARS-CoV-466 had been recorded in Sweden. 2 people died. On September 5890, 28 new infections were detected, five patients died (according to worldometers.info data).
Sweden’s chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, who has become the face of the no-lockdown strategy, recently said that preventive measures (hand washing, social distancing, remote work, etc.) are “as effective” as a total blockade.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in Sweden, schools for children up to 16 years of age have been open, there was only a ban on gathering over 50 people. On the other hand, those who were 70 years of age or older or were at risk were advised to isolate themselves. Shops, bars and restaurants were functioning normally. There was also no order to wear masks.
– The rapidly decreasing number of new infections observed now indicates that transmission can be significantly reduced without completely blocking the country Anders Tegnell added. – The number of deaths is not closely related to the spread of the virus. Rather, their percentage depends on the number of infections among the elderly and the efficiency of the healthcare system.
Experts believe that since most Swedish youth have already had the coronavirus, it will now spread much more slowly in the population.
A study published in August by Professor Tom Britton, a mathematician at Stockholm University, found that if the most sociable and active members of society are infected first, the herd immunity threshold may be as low as 43 percent. This is much less than the 60% rate that was in force so far.
