If the inner walls are not made of stainless steel, sodium-based bleach is a safe bet against dirt. It instantly removes scale and mold from the inside of the dishwasher. Just rinse the walls with it, and then remove the remnants with a damp cloth. If the dirt is persistent, add a little bleach to the detergent container and run a high temperature wash cycle.
