Hallux valgus – how to treat?

How is the so-called hallux valgus?

After taking the X-ray, the diagnosis: hallux valgus. The doctor recommended surgery with the insertion of a titanium plate. I do not know what to do. My leg hurts more and more, I feel as if someone was “setting fire” to my foot under my toes and drilling a hole on the outside. I am asking for advice, I will be very grateful. Thank you.

Without a thorough examination, I cannot respond to the proposal made by the doctor who gave you the advice. The management of valgus of the toe and foot in less advanced stages consists in avoiding situations that aggravate the deformation (e.g. standing for a long time, using shoes that are too narrow or equipped with a high heel). Another recommendation is the use of individually selected orthopedic insoles and devices that keep the fingers in the correct position. Such appliances are used at night because their presence on the foot makes it impossible to walk comfortably. However, during such treatment, the deformation should not be recovered. Conduct can only slow down the progress of change. In the case of more advanced ailments, hallux valgus can be treated with corrective osteotomy.

There are an enormous number of surgical techniques and bone fixation systems that can be used. The choice of the method depends on the patient’s age, the advancement of the lesions and the doctor’s experience.
