Hair polishing: does it make sense?

Due to dry, brittle, tangled ends of the hair, millions of girls are worried. Of course, the easiest way is to take and cut off the damaged strands. But there is a more humane way to solve the problem – hair polishing.

Hair polishing – what is this procedure?

Getting rid of split ends is no easy task. The most reliable way to get rid of them is to cut them off: with scissors, regular or hot, with a straight razor or a special hair polishing machine. The last method is the most careful: not all ends are cut off, but selectively, only damaged ones. And even if the hair splits along the entire length, this is not a problem: the machine, having passed the strands through itself, “gropes” the hairs sticking out in different directions and cuts them off. The result will pleasantly surprise you – even, smooth hair always looks beautiful and healthy.

Who is hair removal suitable for?

If you have straight split ends, the polishing procedure is for you. On wavy ones, it is problematic to perform it, and the effect will be minimal.

It will not be noticeable on short hair. Owners of short haircuts will just have to update their shape more often, at the same time cutting off the damaged tips. But long hair and curls of medium length, hair grinding will transform. The ends after the procedure will become neat, the hair itself will be smooth and obedient, easy to style.

Often, girls with a cascade haircut order polishing the ends of their hair. Growing, milled ends may look untidy and unkempt. But to cut them off means to make the haircut shorter, for which those who have grown their hair for years are not ready. Polishing with a machine will trim the split ends, while the total mass of the hair will not decrease.

Is it worth doing polishing on thin, brittle, weakened hair prone to falling out? Definitely not, it might exacerbate the problem. On curls that have been dyed and permed, stylists also advise mechanical polishing with caution: in most cases, such hair becomes porous and can be damaged even more. Contraindications to the procedure are fungal diseases, infectious and bacterial lesions.

Pros and cons of hair polishing

When agreeing to the procedure, weigh the pros and cons. There are many advantages to hair polishing:

  • the length of the hair is preserved, the machine removes only a few millimeters;

  • damaged ends are cut off, the hair does not split further;

  • with a polishing machine, you can process the hair along the entire length, significantly improving their appearance (this will not work with scissors and a razor);

  • the result will last 3-6 months;

  • hair is not exposed to chemical and thermal effects, which means that it is not damaged even more,

  • and, probably, the main thing that hair polishing gives and why it is done is that the appearance of curls instantly improves, and they fit better than before.

Cons:

  • visually, the volume of hair slightly decreases (fluffy ones always look more magnificent);

  • the procedure does not “cure” curls, but only transforms them outwardly.

How to polish split ends of hair

Polishing split ends in the salon is performed with a dangerous razor or a machine (more precisely, a special nozzle for a hair clipper). The master can also offer polishing with scissors.

What is hair polishing with scissors? In fact, this is a corrective haircut. How is it done? The master, in order to highlight the split strands, twists them into a tourniquet, and then cuts the breaking hairs with well-sharpened scissors. The pros and cons of the procedure depend on the skill of the stylist. But in any case, the curls will look better than before polishing.

Straight razor

Polishing with scissors requires a very well-sharpened tool. If not, use a straight razor. The essence of the procedure and the technology are the same: the strands are twisted with a tourniquet and the protruding hairs are cut off.

Typewriter

When a machine is used to polish the hair, the difference before and after such exposure is very noticeable. The procedure is faster than other resurfacing options, it has fewer flaws, and the effect lasts longer. In general, if there is ever a “scissors, razor or typewriter” competition, the latter will most likely win.

How hair polishing is done in the salon: execution technique

The first stage (it doesn’t matter if you are doing the procedure in the salon or at home) is hair preparation. They are washed, dried, carefully combed. If the curls are very fluffy, use an iron – they slightly stretch the strands. The following steps follow:

  • strands are separated – each is pulled out with a comb and fixed with a grinder at a distance of 10-15 cm from the root; if the hair is perfectly straight, the strand is directed upwards; if you have a “cascade” or graduation, the curls are pulled down.

  • carefully, without stopping in any of the sections, they pull the strand through the machine; if there is a lot of damaged hair, the procedure is repeated.

In the process of polishing, 3-5 mm of hair is cut off – during the haircut, of course, much more of them goes away.

How long does hair removal take?

It depends on the skill of the master and the amount of hair that needs to be polished. In general, how long polishing is done is a strictly individual question. The procedure can last 30 minutes or 2 hours.
