Hair loss in men

A bald head in a man does not affect the attitude of women towards him. But the representatives of the stronger sex themselves treat hair loss as a serious problem. And it’s worth talking about.

Signs of hair loss in men

Normally, a person loses 50 to 100 hairs a day. It seems that this is quite a lot, but no one notices this loss and it does not affect the hairstyle in any way, because the process of hairline renewal is continuous, and the number of hair follicles on the head is in the tens of thousands.

The problem occurs when the number of hairs shed out exceeds the number of hairs that grow back. At what point is it time to grab your head? How to understand that the hair falls out more than normal and they are really thinning? Especially suspicious trichologists offer to keep a record of the hair that has fallen out during the day. But this, of course, is an extreme measure.

Normally, a person loses up to 100 hairs a day.

If it seems to you that too much hair falls out during shampooing, that more of it remains on the comb, on the pillow after sleep, on clothes, examine them carefully: a large number of hairs that have fallen out along with the bulb may indicate incipient alopecia (baldness) .

There are several types of alopecia, that is, hair loss:

  1. Androgenetic alopeciaor male pattern baldness. This is the most common type of alopecia and has hormonal and hereditary causes. The parietal part and crown are most susceptible to thinning. The first stage is expressed in the formation of slight bald patches along the hairline on the forehead and temporal region, which subsequently worsen and become pronounced. This process may be accompanied by thinning of the hair.

  2. Diffuse alopecia characterized by uniform thinning of hair over the entire area of the head. It also occurs quite often.

  3. Focal alopecia – a disease manifested by multiple islets of alopecia.

  4. Scarring alopecia associated with inflammation of the hair follicles.

  5. Alopecia totalis – complete loss of hair. The extreme stage of alopecia areata is characterized by rapid and abrupt hair loss, which can end in complete baldness in a couple of months.

At what age do hair begin to thin?

The most common form of increased hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia. The name suggests a close relationship between hair loss and androgens (the main one is testosterone).

Strictly speaking, it is not the androgens themselves that are to blame for the suppression of hair growth (otherwise alopecia in men would be a variant of the norm), but the increased sensitivity of special hair follicle receptors to them, which is observed only in a certain percentage of men.

“This is an inherited trait (in the male line), which in most cases is the root cause of androgenetic alopecia, which develops as early as 20-25 years old. Hormonal imbalance, disruption of the endocrine system, stress and lifestyle are of great importance,” notes Ekaterina Turubara.

Causes of hair loss on the head

There may be several reasons for hair loss in young 35-year-old men, in addition to genetic predisposition and special sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens:

Hormonal disorders

In particular, diffuse alopecia is often associated with disorders of the thyroid gland.

Psychosomatics and stress

The release of adrenaline and cortisol can injure the hair follicles, and prolonged stress will respond to the deterioration of blood circulation and nutrition of the hair follicles, which can cause inhibition of hair growth and hair loss.

Nervous overload and chronic fatigue can lead to alopecia.

Infectious diseases

“Hair loss is often caused by intoxication of the body (for example, after illness or medication), that is, the accumulation of toxic substances,” says the expert. This applies primarily to heavy chemotherapy. But not only. Hair loss can be associated with infectious and non-infectious diseases of the digestive system.

Vitamin deficiency

An unbalanced diet can lead to a lack of vitamin C, B vitamins (in particular, B12), zinc, potassium, iron, magnesium, essential fatty acids, which negatively affects the condition of the hair and the body as a whole.

What to do if hair falls out

The solution to the problem depends on its scale, but in any case, competent care of the hair and scalp is important. The trichologist will help to understand the causes and eliminate them, develop a care program and, if necessary, treatment.

Cosmetical tools

As Vichy medical expert Ekaterina Turubara explains, cosmetics for scalp care work in two directions:

  1. prevent collagen compaction around the hair root, maintaining softness and elasticity of tissues

“Under the influence of the active form of testosterone, there is a compaction of the connective tissue around the hair follicle. At the same time, its shape changes: from a large and full-fledged one, it turns into a miniature one. Such follicles begin to produce thin and weak hair, which ends with their progressive loss.

  2. nourish the skin around the hair follicle

“The hair follicle cells are one of the fastest dividing cells in our body. Hair growth requires a large amount of energy and nutrients that come from the blood vessels. Therefore, microcirculation of blood in the hair follicle plays an important role (it is noted that the blood supply in the hair follicle subject to thinning is much lower).

A complex remedy for hair loss for men in ampoules Dercos Aminexil Men, Vichy

The formula is based on a combination of the aminexil molecule (combats hair loss), arginine (stimulates blood circulation and improves the nutrition of the bulbs), octeine (has an antibacterial effect and soothes the skin), as well as hair-strengthening vitamins PP and B6 and mineralizing thermal water. Depending on the intensity of the fallout, from three single doses per week to one single dose per day are applied for six weeks.

Salon procedures

  • Mesotherapy. Injection of drugs with components that stimulate hair growth and blood circulation. Quite a sensitive procedure.

  • Laser therapy. It is effective in the initial stages of alopecia, when the hair follicles can still be restored with the help of laser energy.

  • Transplantation. Hair follicles of the occipital part, not subject to androgenetic hair loss, are transplanted to the bald area.

  • Cryotherapy, electrotherapy, massage. Aimed at activating blood flow and metabolism in the scalp.

Appeal to the trichologist

To solve the problem radically, of course, you need to contact a specialist. Do not delay your visit with a sudden loss of a large amount of hair – the sooner the cause is identified, the better.

Growing bald patches can be a warning sign.

Methods of prevention

“If this is heredity and early hair loss is observed in male relatives, then most likely this process will also affect you. If the reason lies in the violation of trophism and nutrition of hair follicles (as a result of stress, improper lifestyle), then the process can be stopped, ”warns Ekaterina Turubara.

However, in any case, it is worth taking a number of preventive measures, especially since they mainly concern health, and not just care.

  • Don’t skimp on your diet. It should be saturated with proteins and fatty acids, which are abundant in fish, meat, olive oil. Eat foods rich in vitamin C and zinc.

  • Take a course of multivitamins twice a year.

  • Massage your scalp to improve blood circulation. This procedure also gives a relaxing effect.

  • Avoid nervous exhaustion, take care of the quality of sleep and rest.

  • Lead an active lifestyle so that all body systems work smoothly and fully.

  • Do not neglect hygiene, use a special shampoo for hair loss – infrequent shampooing leads to the accumulation of sebum at the mouth of the follicles, which can increase hair loss.

The key to healthy hair remains an integrated approach. And competent care for them is an integral part of it.
