Why can my baby’s hair fall out? Can a child’s hair loss be a symptom of any disease? Is this a cause for concern? Which specialist is worth visiting? Is it better to wait out the situation and not panic? Could this be a sign of cancer development? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.

Why can my baby’s hair fall out?

Good day. Recently, I noticed that my one-year-old daughter started to lose her hair. Of course, not in large numbers, it is not that after combing the hair a lot of hair is left in your hand, but it clearly appears on the brush or in your hand. What are the causes of hair loss in a child? Is it normal at such an age for a child’s hair to fall out and simply grow new, or for a child’s hair loss to indicate some disease? This is my first child and I have no experience with it.

I wonder if I should go with my little daughter to a specialist doctor or simply to a pediatrician, or is it better not to panic for now and wait for the whole situation to be completely normal? I know that in old age hair loss is a dangerous symptom of various neoplastic diseases, but what is it like in a child? I started to worry seriously. I would like to point out that my daughter has never suffered from anything serious, fortunately there has been no problem with her health. Please reply.

The doctor explains the causes of hair loss in young children

The causes of hair loss in children, as in adults, there can be many. From nutritional deficiencies, malabsorption disorders, the use of certain medications, dermatological diseases such as mycosis of the scalp, psychological background, e.g. stress, in the course of infectious diseases, to systemic diseases such as hypothyroidism / hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or rare genetic diseases, infectious diseases such as like syphilis.

It is important to have a medical history taken by a physician from the patient’s parent. Since when hair loss occurs, can it be related to some event in the child’s life? How severe is it. Are there bald patches on the head, scars, peeling epidermis. All this information will help you choose the appropriate diagnosis and, as a result, introduce the appropriate treatment. Depending on the symptoms, the doctor may order blood tests and refer them to a dermatology specialist who will, for example, collect material for mycological tests.

Hair loss does not always mean that a child is ill. A child in the infancy and early childhood period usually has little hair that rubs and falls out, sometimes leaving bald patches on the head. It is a physiological process that is not alarming. Due to the sensitive scalp of babies, it is important to remember about proper daily care. You should not wash your baby’s head every day, once or twice a week is enough.

We do not use shampoos in hair care, but gentle bath lotions for babies. Comb your hair with a soft brush that will not tear it out. Hair ornaments, although they often look beautiful on a small head, can unfortunately cause excessive hair loss. If you have any doubts as to whether your child’s hair loss is a disease symptom, go to the pediatrician. Your doctor will examine you and assess whether there is any cause for concern and, if necessary, implement diagnostics.
