  1. The Ebola virus epidemic ended in Guinea just two months ago
  2. The case of an 18-year-old woman who arrived in Côte d’Ivoire is unrelated to the previous epidemic. However, it is associated with a high risk, because the woman lives in a city of 4 million, which may become the focus of further infections
  3. Guinea now has a problem with another virus that causes hemorrhagic fever – the highly lethal Marburg virus

Ebola virus from Guinea. For the first time in 25 years, it has been detected in Côte d’Ivoire

Guinea is the country most hit by the Ebola virus epidemic so far. The most tragic took place in the years 2013-2016, when a total of approx. 2 thousand people died. 500 people.

Another Ebola outbreak occurred this year. However, the country’s authorities announced on June 19 that it had been completed. The situation may not be under control, however, given that the Ebola virus came to Côte d’Ivoire from Guinea. It happened thanks to a woman who came overland from a neighboring country. The 18-year-old arrived in the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire, Abidjan, on August 12.

According to the local health minister Pierre Dimba, the patient developed a fever and was taken to hospital, where she is being treated. At the same time, measures were taken to vaccinate all people with whom the woman might have come into contact.

In Côte d’Ivoire, there has not been a single case of Ebola haemorrhagic fever in 25 years. It is crucial to nip an outbreak of infection in the bud – especially as the infected woman has arrived in a city where 4 million people live. This is of great concern to the World Health Organization. If the virus could spread freely, there could be an Ebola outbreak in Côte d’Ivoire soon.

The Ebola virus is spread by droplets through direct contact with an infected person. It can also be infected by contact with blood or objects contaminated with the virus.

The death rate of the Ebola virus is as high as 90 percent.

Symptoms of Ebola virus infection:
  1. sudden increase in temperature
  2. headache
  3. sore throat
  4. muscle pain
  5. feeling crashed
  6. persistent dry cough
  7. maculo-papular rash
  8. after about 7 days, hemorrhagic fever develops, with blood coagulation disorder. At this stage, bloody diarrhea appears, as well as hemorrhages into the body cavities

A case of the Marburg virus was detected in Guinea a few days ago

On June 19, Guinea announced the end of the Ebola epidemic, although, considering the case of the 18-year-old, it may turn out that the virus has not been completely defeated. At the moment, however, it cannot be said, because it is not known with which strain the woman in the hospital is infected. It may turn out to be a new mutation – other than the one that was responsible for the recent outbreak.

However, Guinea has to fight another highly contagious and very dangerous disease. It is about the Marburg virus, the case of which was discovered in this country just a few days ago.

Marburg virus also causes hemorrhagic fever, and its mortality rate ranges from 24% to 88%, depending on the variant. The virus was first detected in 1967 in the former West Germany. Scientists contracted it during the autopsy of monkeys brought from Uganda.
