Gymnastics on TCP table

Presentation

TCP Table Gymnastics, along with various other approaches, is part of somatic education. The Somatic education sheet presents a summary table allowing a comparison of the main approaches.

La Gymnastics on TCP table is a training method focused onpostural balance which aims to form a flexible, strong and enduring body. It helps to facilitate both daily activities and sports training. Gymnastics on the TCP table is practiced on the “Penchenat table”, designed at the beginning of the XNUMXth century.e century by a French massokinesitherapist, Ferdinand Penchenat, as a tool for the rehabilitation of musculature deep.

Since you can sit and grab onto it in many ways, the table allows, among other things, to place various parts of the body suspended in a vacuum. This gravitational imbalance puts tension on under-activated muscles in standing or floor exercises. The Penchenat table also allows great freedom in space, therefore, multiple possibilities ofexercices.

Designer of the method, Thérèse Cadrin Petit defines the Gymnastics on TCP table (which bears his initials) as “physiotherapy approached as dance training”. His exercises are slow and safe, under the close supervision of the instructors. There are different programs (focused, for example, on stretching, back care, resistance, etc.) and different levels (beginner, elementary, intermediate, advanced).

From dance to physiology

Formerly a classical dancer, Thérèse Cadrin Petit was also trained in osteopathy and the Alexander technique. It was when she was responsible for the bodily training of actors at the National Theater School of Canada that she was introduced to the Penchenat table. She then integrated the “table” into the program of this school, where it is still part of the curriculum.

Later, she partnered with Doctor of Physiology and Professor of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Mindy Levin to create new exercises. The progressive program they have designed is aimed at untrained people as well as athletes or dancers. Gymnastics on the TCP table is today an original and complete method, different from the Penchenat practice as it is still done in France.

TCP Table Gymnastics – Therapeutic Applications

La Gymnastics on TCP table is first of all a form ofphysical training, accessible to everyone. It is also a preventive practice, which allows to avoid the problems generated by bad posture, repetitive movements or static positions.

The exercises focus onpostural training, because we know today that the correct posture is one of the fundamental parameters of Good shape physical1 and that bad posture (often unconscious) is a source of spinal pain2 and neuromuscular tension.

This approach helps to relieve muscle and joint stress and, therefore, also serves as rehabilitation for people struggling with this kind of problem.

We did not find any study published in a scientific journal that systematically evaluated TCP Table Gymnastics. The technique, in addition to various treatments, has however been the subject of numerous writings and favorable comments from health professionals.

Cons-indications

  • When there is pain in the muscles or joints, it is always best to consult a healthcare practitioner before undertaking any type of exercise.

Gymnastics on TCP table – In practice

TCP Table Gymnastics is practiced indoors, in private or in groups of different levels. Group sessions last approximately 75 minutes, including a cardiovascular warm-up and stretching. The exercises tone and harmonize all muscle groups (trunk, abdominals, back, limbs).

Beforehand, a private postural evaluation meeting allows the instructor to identify the person’s weaknesses and guide him or her to the right type of program.

The approach is offered in several regions of Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. Contact details for schools can be found on the TCP Table Gymnastics website.

You can also do stretching exercises by listening to the stretching CDs created by Thérèse Cadrin Petit (see Books, etc.).

TCP Table Gymnastics – Training

“TCP Table Gymnastics” is a reserved name with legal deposit. Only instructors trained by Thérèse Cadrin Petit are authorized to use it. The training includes: 200 hours of theoretical learning; at least 150 hours of personal practice; and a minimum of 50 hours of course observation and supervised teaching. Continuing education includes compulsory annual improvement and review seminars.

Conditions d’admission

To be admitted, one must have practiced TCP Table Gymnastics at an advanced level for at least one year. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (physiotherapy, physical education, training science, athletic therapy) or equivalent experience is also required.
