When choosing a security system for a home, dacha, office or apartment, people increasingly prefer GSM alarms, which are distinguished by availability (price), reliability and ease of maintenance.
Below we will consider the subtleties of such alarms, how they work, and which models deserve the most attention. In addition, we highlight the nuances of choice and types of modern security devices.
Distinctive features and principle of operation of GSM-alarm systems
The structure of GSM security systems is based on the interaction of tracking sensors and the central unit via a mobile network. Data transfer is provided using a SIM card of any of the operators. In simple terms, a GSM alarm is security equipment with informing the owner by phone.
The main elements of the GSM alarm system are the central unit, which, after connection, finds and interacts with all sensors installed in the house.
If any of the control elements worked (movement, glass breaking or other evidence of tampering was detected), the base receives an alarm signal and the siren goes off. At the same time, an alarm message is sent to the owner’s mobile phone.
The security equipment is programmed in such a way that the alarm goes on until the return (receive) signal is given.
The algorithm of actions of the main unit is set by the owner, and each of the zones is programmed for a specific signal. This approach allows you to accurately determine in which zone the device worked.
The GSM alarm system is used in various fields of activity – it is installed to protect a summer house, house, apartment or office. The kit may include external devices that notify of the operation of the system (for example, a siren or a bell). Some elements are controlled remotely using a mobile device.
A feature of the systems is the ability to connect different types of control elements, which allows you to monitor different situations, namely the opening of windows and doors, movement, smoke, gas leakage, and so on. The principle of operation is simple and is based on opening the circuit contacts or changing (increasing, decreasing) resistance.
The main GSM signaling unit has limited functions. A specific number of sensors can be connected to it (determined by the manufacturer). That is why, when choosing a device, it is important to focus on the size of the room (we will discuss the issues of choosing a security system below).
Benefits of GSM alarm
Devices for the protection of a house, apartment or cottage, built on the principle of transmitting a GSM signal, are in great demand.
The main advantages include:
- RELIABILITY. Information that is transmitted to the central unit is encrypted, which reduces the risk of signal interception.
- AVAILABILITY OF ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS. Some models can turn on watering, start heating, activate climate control or participate in the operation of a smart home, for example, Xiaomi Smart Home.
- CONTROL AND PROTECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS PROPERTY. The functionality of the GSM alarm system is not limited to the protection of real estate (houses, cottages, offices, warehouses and other objects). With its help, it is easy to protect a car or other material assets.
- EASY INTEGRATION. If required, connection to other systems is available, namely ventilation, lighting, unblocking emergency exits, and so on.
- SIMPLICITY OF SETTINGS. To place, connect and set the algorithm of actions, deep knowledge is not required – just read and follow the operating instructions for the selected model. Even a beginner will be able to deal with the features of work (except for the PRO segment).
- CONTROL OF VARIOUS OBJECTS. With the correct installation of sensors around the perimeter of the premises, it is possible to control company employees, the actions of a nanny or a nurse.
- LARGE AREA. GSM alarm coverage is limited only by mobile network coverage. To expand the area of work (typically for rural areas), it is recommended to buy and install an additional amplifier.
- IMPOSSIBLE TO DEACTIVATE OR THEFT. Immediately after the security system is triggered, a signal is sent to the owner at the number specified in the program. At the same time, it will not work to steal or mute the data sent to the central unit and from it to the owner. Wired devices that depend on auxiliary power have a lower level of protection.
- POSSIBILITY TO CONNECT UP TO 20 AND MORE CONTROLLERS. Depending on the area of the object and the model of the product, several dozens of control elements can be connected, covering the maximum area.
- SAVING POWER SOURCE. To extend the life of the batteries, a special (pulse) operation mode is set. This means that the security system is activated at certain time intervals (once every few seconds or minutes) to monitor the status of the protected object.
- WIDE FUNCTIONALITY. Some models have an option that allows you to send an alarm signal to several phone numbers at once. As a result, not only the owner is notified about the situation, but also the relevant services (police, fire brigades, special security structures and other bodies).
Disadvantages of GSM-alarm system
To avoid difficulties in the future, it is important to take into account the disadvantages of the devices in question:
- Risk of false alarm (especially for wireless sensors). This situation is possible, therefore, in order to avoid difficulties, it is recommended to correctly calculate the number of sensors. With this approach, it is possible to cover zones without overlapping the signal on each other. The closer the devices are located, the higher the risk of malfunction. It is better to use wired sensors.
- Poor equipment (except for some models). Many buyers perceive this feature as an advantage. A person does not overpay for unnecessary options, but selects the necessary elements himself. In addition, you can buy controllers from other manufacturers, while saving money.
- Malfunctions at temperatures below zero. This minus is due to the “weakness” of food sources to frost.
- The complexity of installation and configuration (for models from the professional segment).
- Low reliability and the need for construction and installation work (for wired models).
Which GSM alarms are most in demand?
The following GSM-systems designed for protection are in demand on the market:
- Houses from flooding. It is applied to protection of the companies, firms and warehouse.
- Apartments. Such devices are usually equipped with control, monitoring and notification systems.
- Garages. The system notifies the owner of the garage via CMC in case of unauthorized opening of the door, penetration of unauthorized persons (motion sensor). Also, an audible alarm from 110dB is simultaneously triggered.
- Automobile transport.
- Dachas. These models are often equipped with temperature sensors and are used not only for the home, but also mounted in greenhouses. Their functionality allows you to control the temperature level and report the deviation of this parameter.
In addition, GSM-controllers for cars are used (protection against theft), as well as devices for monitoring and changing (if necessary) the temperature in refrigeration devices. With the help of devices you can adjust the temperature and operating time.
Types of GSM alarms
There are two types of GSM alarms on the market – wired and wireless.
Wired
Wired GSM alarms involve the use of wires that connect the receivers and the main unit. Such devices have an affordable price, but require the installation of connecting products into the wall.
For this reason, it is impossible to do without the involvement of specialists and the implementation of a large amount of construction and installation activities. The total costs for the purchase and installation of wired systems are commensurate with the costs associated with wireless GSM alarms.
Wired devices are bought, as a rule, by the owners of the protected object. If the building is rented, you will have to take permission from the owner to carry out construction and installation work.
In addition, the wires are located inside the wall, which complicates the maintenance (repair) of the system. Another disadvantage is the low level of security, because the wires coming out of the wall can be easily cut off, thereby neutralizing the security device.
The exceptions include small objects, cottages, garages, where a small number of sensors are installed and there is no need to hide the wires in the walls.
Also, wired sensors require additional power, usually 12 V, but on the other hand, there is savings on batteries installed in wireless counterparts. Batteries, as a rule, work for 2-3 months, and even less in the cold and they have to be changed often.
Wireless
A more preferable option is wireless GSM alarms, which are more expensive, but do not create difficulties during the installation process.
There are no wires connecting the controllers and the central unit, so there is no need for construction and installation and other cosmetic work.
Such devices are easy to install and remove, and all elements are available for subsequent maintenance (prevention and repair). In addition, wireless devices are reliable, because it will no longer be possible to cut the wires and remove the protection.
If there is an Internet module in the kit, the owner receives information about the situation in the apartment, house, office or warehouse. When an intruder breaks into an object, a person receives an alarm message, and a video or photo is displayed on the phone.
The owner sees what exactly caused the alarm – an animal or a real intruder, and then decides on the need to call the police.
When choosing a wireless system, it is important to consider the strength of the transmitted signal from the central unit to the sensors. If there are many walls between the main module and the controlling bodies, the signal may lose power and not reach the controlling body at the crucial moment.
The disadvantage of wireless devices is that they are powered by batteries that tend to discharge.
In some models of sensors, non-standard power supplies are installed, which are not easy to find on our market and they are not cheap.
This is the main advantage of wired sensors over wireless ones.
Wireless GSM alarms are divided into three segments:
- DIY;
- PRO;
- “Hybrids”.
DIY segment
Devices that can be mounted independently, without the involvement of specialists. Some products are compatible with existing smart home elements. The advantage is the ease of installation and configuration, but the level of protection and encryption is much lower.
Such security systems are easier to hack, jam or leave without channels for communication. In addition, cheap elements are used in the manufacturing process, which does not allow for fine tuning. As a result, the risk of erroneous operation is high.
Connecting DIY products directly to the central security console is out of the question, because the owner will go broke paying for services for false calls.
PRO segment
Installation of such GSM alarms is the task of a specialist with the necessary skills and abilities. PRO level models have quality certificates, which guarantees the reliability of protection of any object, whether it is a house, cottage, office or warehouse.
Such systems are reliable, they are not afraid of power loss, they are difficult to drown out or cut off the channel. In addition, they are easy to maintain. An important plus is the best quality of communication between the main module and sensors, as well as the use of a powerful radio communication protocol that is resistant to hacking attempts.
Unlike DIY, PRO-alarms can be output to a central security post.
The downside is the need to involve specialists to install the device, which requires additional costs. In addition, the interface of such models can hardly be called simple, which requires time from the user (you will have to figure out the work and settings).

Segment – “hybrids”
These are new developments that combine the advantages of DIY and PRO. From DIY, ease of setup and control is taken (special applications for mobile are used), ease of installation and no need for adjustment.
It is based on reliable software that is configured and updated remotely (if required). From PRO, a high level of protection and no problems with the power supply are taken. In such models, as a rule, an additional battery, protection against jamming, as well as a backup channel for supplying a GSM signal are provided.
Hybrid systems use proprietary protocols that allow communication between the base unit and sensors over a distance of up to two kilometers.
As in the case of the PRO models, “hybrids” can be displayed on the central alarm console. They have the best functionality. They can be supplemented with receivers that monitor the occurrence of a flood, smoke or leaks.
What’s Included – Common Options
The complete set of the GSM-alarm system depends on the model and cost of the device. There are two options – standard and extended.
In the first case, the composition includes tracking sensors, notifications about the opening of doors and windows, as well as a siren and key fobs. If desired, the buyer of a standard system has the right to supplement it with other controllers (immediately or after some time).
Advanced options imply the presence of a larger number of sensors that control the fact of flooding, smoke and other events.
Criterias of choice
When buying a GSM alarm, it is important to focus on the following criteria:
- PURPOSE: . It is worth deciding for what purposes the system will be used – protection against thieves, detection of the fact of intruder penetration or protection of the territory.
- LOCATION. It is important to take into account the presence in the vicinity of areas where people permanently live (including in winter). This is important if the security equipment is mounted on objects remote from the city (for example, a summer house). It is important to take into account the time it will take to overcome the distance between the house and the protected object where the alarm went off.
- OPERATOR. The signal is transmitted via the GSM channel, but it is important to consider the operator whose SIM card will be installed in the device. The more coverage, the more reliable the system. It is important to focus on the availability of the signal in the place where the protected object is located. If the coverage is weak, you will have to think about replacing the operator or installing an amplifier. Some operators offer special packages, for example, in Ukraine it is Kyivstar Sensor, in Russia from Beeline Signal, Zero Doubts. From Megaphone “Go to zero.” From MTS “Super MTS” or “Per second”. IMPORTANT: the name of the packages may change.
- TEMPERATURE MODE. In the race for original design and functionality, many choose foreign-made products. But they, as a rule, have a big drawback – they are not adapted to the harsh winter climate and temperature fluctuations. As a result, the receivers may not work or, conversely, work falsely. For example, some control units are not designed to operate at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius. As for the sensors, their optimal mode is from -10 to +40 (50) degrees Celsius.
- TYPE OF DEVICE. As noted, GSM alarms are wired or wireless. Each type has its pros and cons, but the second option is more preferable because of the ease of installation, reliability and ease of subsequent management. The best option is hybrid segment models.
- NUMBER OF CONTROLLERS. In the standard configuration, as a rule, only basic protection is provided – against penetration and burglary. But in the extended versions, there are other sensors that transmit signals to the central unit about the appearance of smoke, flood, violation of environmental standards, changes in temperature, and so on. That is why they should only be installed in heated rooms.
- FEATURES OF THE PROTECTED OBJECT. When choosing a GSM alarm system, it is important to count the number of doors and windows in the house so that the security equipment covers the entire building.
- AVAILABILITY OF PETS. Living in an apartment for pets requires the installation of a special motion receiver (PIR type). Otherwise, the movement of the animal around the apartment will cause a false alarm. In such cases, photo or video recording may be required.
- INSTALLATION AND SETUP EXPERIENCE. If you have not had to deal with such equipment, it is better to take simple wireless GSM alarms or enlist the help of specialists. It is worth considering that an incorrect setting entails false positives or failure. There are models, a detailed review of which has already been carried out, including their tuning. You can search for such reviews on Ycom.
- RANGE OF WORK. When it comes to protecting the apartment, there is no point in high wireless signal strength between the main unit and the controlling elements. It is a different matter if the area of the protected area is large, and the main module and the regulatory authorities are separated by a large number of walls. Then range is key.
- DEVICE TYPE – autonomous or with transfer to the central console. It is important to decide who the equipment will inform about penetration or other problems. In stand-alone systems, information is shared only with the owner. But it is possible to connect to a centralized security console. In the latter case, a GSM alarm from the PRO segment or a hybrid type must be installed.

General connection principle
One of the advantages of a GSM alarm system is the ease of connection and configuration, which was mentioned at the beginning of the article. The installation of equipment takes a minimum of time, even for an unprepared user. It is recommended to start with the installation of the central unit, after which the tracking elements are installed. It is important that they are equidistant from the main unit.
IR motion sensors are mounted at a height of 2-2,5 meters from the floor, and the angle of inclination is not more than 90 degrees. The distance at which the device works is about 8 m, and the viewing angle does not exceed 110 degrees.
Devices that control the fact of opening the doors are placed on a fixed base, and the magnet is attached to the moving leaf. In this case, the gap between the elements should be no more than 1 cm. Next, the adjustment is made taking into account the manufacturer’s instructions.
Creating a GSM alarm system with your own hands
If desired, you can make the following GSM alarms:
- No old phone (on Arduino Uno).
- With an IR motion sensor (for summer cottages and at home).
- A simple system based on any mobile phone.
Below we give instructions for creating a GSM alarm system with a phone. It indicates the necessary equipment that will be required for work, and considers the assembly sequence.
GSM-alarm system based on mobile phone
To save money, more and more craftsmen assemble a security system with their own hands.
To complete the work you will need:
- Mobile phone (should have a speed dial feature).
- A sensor that reads sounds (microphone).
- 12 V battery (acid-gel). It is recommended to use a high-capacity battery, which increases the operating time of the equipment in the event of a power failure. You can use a 12V adapter.
- Button controller (will respond to the opening of doors).
- Soldering iron, lead and solder.
The principle of operation of the alarm system is based on the closure of the digit on the phone, where the call to the owner is programmed.
The algorithm is as follows:
- We decide on the number on the keyboard and set the speed dial option through the phone.
- We make sure that the specified function works correctly (the phone must dial the specified number).
- We remove the back cover of the mobile device, remove the front part from the display and open access to the board (a white film is installed on it).
- We make a couple of cuts above the button of interest to connect the wires.
- Raise the film and see the metal membrane (located on the inside). This element provides contact closure.
- Solder the wire to a pair of contacts. It is recommended to take a two-wire wire, which will reduce the risk of interference and false dialing.
- We stick a piece of electrical tape on the membrane to avoid false positives when the button is pressed. If you plan to continue using the phone for its intended purpose, you do not need to remove the membrane.
As soon as the considered work is completed, the phone is ready for use. Now you need to install the alarm itself, which ensures the operability of the system. To realize our plans, it is important to determine the principle of closing two contacts.
Note that when creating GSM alarms, a pair of microcircuits is used – such as K561LA7 and K561LN2. Their feature is the ability to set the time for the owner to leave the controlled object and enter to turn off the system. During this period, there is a delay in operation.
With the right manufacture of an alarm system with your own hands, its capabilities are expanded due to the installation of special sensors.
The subtleties of connecting the phone to the alarm
One option is to use a relay with a normally open contact group. The winding of the product is connected to the alarm output. When an alarm is activated, voltage is applied to the winding, the contact group is connected, and the button closes. As a result, a call is sent to the owner’s phone.
Another way is to use a 2-pole transistor, which is installed on the telephone board. The output of the product is switched with a common conductor, and the collector is combined with the contact of the button.
With this connection, power is supplied to the base of the transistor through a resistor, and the GSM alarm is triggered. Masters who have assembled such a scheme and use it in practice speak of the reliability and clarity of its work.
An optocoupler is used to create galvanic isolation. Its elements do not have common contacts, so the protection system can be powered from various sources (without the use of common conductors).
An equally important point is the provision of uninterrupted power supply. For this, a battery is used, which must be in full charge mode. As an option, use the phone’s battery, but to charge it, it is recommended to use a charger up to 4 volts with a load current of 700 to 1000 mA.
An alternative is to refuse the battery built into the phone and connect it to a security system power source with a voltage of 12 volts and constant recharging. In this case, a transformer and a current converter are mounted. Before applying voltage to the phone, it is important to check its level (U is allowed up to 3,9-4 V).
Modern GSM alarms are affordable and reliable devices that can protect any object from various troubles (penetration by unauthorized persons, fire, flooding, and so on).
Such devices are easy to set up, have a full range of functions and are easy to install. They are designed to protect houses, apartments, offices, garages, cottages and even cars.
The main thing is to choose the right model, and if necessary, expand the package by installing additional sensors.
