An expert of the Supreme Medical Council stated that three weeks ago Poland was still a green island when it comes to diseases. Currently, the number of positive tests has exceeded 4% and the virus reproduction rate is 1,5%, which means that “the epidemic is booming and the wave is now out of control”.
Delta variant: one person infects up to 10 others

He noted that official statistics indicate that from the beginning of the epidemic in Poland over 3 million people became infected with the coronavirus, 77 died sick. In his opinion, these data are underestimated. He believes that when it comes to the number of daily cases, the underestimation is fivefold.
«We estimate – also on the basis of seroepidemiology – that the real number of infections in Poland exceeded 15 million, and the number of deaths was around 140 thousand. So we have to look at covid not as the virus would want us to think that it is a rare disease and rarely leads to severe complications »- said Dr. Grzesiowski.
He reminded that the actual death rate due to the coronavirus is 1 percent.
Grzesiowski: We have a difficult 8 weeks ahead of us
The epidemic also – according to Dr. Grzesiowski – is not spreading evenly, the most cases are recorded on the eastern wall – Lublin region, Podlasie – and is gradually shifting towards Mazovia and the western voivodships.
Dr. Grzesiowski predicts that the wave, although it is weaker due to the fact that some people have been vaccinated, will continue until the end of this year.
“We have another 8 weeks of difficult situation ahead of us for medical institutions and the health care system” – said Dr. Grzesiowski. He added that by the end of the year there may already be around 20. occupied beds for about 180 thousand. hospital beds and 1500 ventilators.
In his opinion, the restrictions should have been introduced locally long ago, taking into account the fact that in some regions of Poland the situation is catastrophic. During the last week in Lublin, the number of infections reached 102 per 100 thousand. inhabitants, in other provinces the situation is not so bad. Nevertheless, the obligation to wear masks in closed rooms should – in his opinion – be introduced by law. Additionally, more discipline should apply to the unvaccinated.
“If the children died, the decisions would be different”
“Any mass events held in closed rooms should be the first limiting action. As well as the introduction of the principle of masks as mandatory. There is no discussion here, it should be a statutory obligation (…). Another aspect of distinguishing between vaccinated and unvaccinated people is. There is no doubt that the unvaccinated person is more dangerous to the environment – he transmits the virus longer and more intensively »- he said.

He also emphasized that if the epidemic was of a different nature, for example, hundreds of children would die, the intervention would have been much faster a long time ago and there would have been no discussion about the fight against the pandemic for a long time.

It is terrible in this pandemic that the group that is dying has no support from the public, but also from the authorities (…). We have to realize that the restrictions applied in the wider society will save the lives of many people in the 50-plus group »- he concluded and added that we do not do it.
