Growing strawberries in pipes
The lack of space in the garden is not a hindrance to growing strawberries. For this purpose, many gardeners have successfully used a conventional PVC pipe.
Strawberries in pipes have gained popularity due to the fact that they can be placed anywhere, and caring for the plant does not require much physical effort.
Growing strawberries in pipes has many advantages, including the mobility of the garden and the lack of the need to till the soil.
First, you need to prepare all the necessary components and tools:
- PVC pipe with a diameter of 15-20 cm;
- drill;
- chisel 2-3 mm;
- an additional pipe of a smaller diameter 10 cm longer than the first;
- burlap;
- a twine for an irrigation pipe;
- caps;
- soil;
- strawberry seedlings.
The first step is to cut the pipe to the desired length. A plug should be installed on one side.
On a narrow pipe, make holes every 10 cm in a couple of rows. It will be located inside the first pipe and will act as watering for the plant. After that, it must be wrapped in burlap and rewound with twine. The lower end should be closed with adhesive tape.
With the vertical method of growing in a large pipe, holes are made in 3 rows every 20-30 cm in such a diameter that a strawberry bush (about 8-10 cm) fits.
It is important that the pipe is 15 cm from the floor intact, without holes
In the case of a horizontal upset, you will need to cut holes on one side or cut the pipe lengthwise.
Vertical bed for growing strawberries
Install the prepared structure vertically, then place a narrower one in a large pipe. The empty space should be filled with gravel or other absorbent material 15-20 cm high.
Before growing strawberries in a pre-prepared pipe, you need to fill up the soil in such a way that no air layers are formed. The final stage is planting seedlings and watering through a narrow pipe.
Horizontal bed for growing strawberries
After creating the holes, you need to install plugs, but, unlike a vertical bed, on both sides. A hole should be made in the center for draining excess liquid. At the end, add expanded clay, about half of the pipe, and soil.
Growing strawberries in pipes is a very popular method that allows you to get a rich harvest without worrying about weeds and diseases. Care for such a planting includes watering, feeding, protection from pests and does not fundamentally differ from strawberries grown in the ground. At the same time, a structure with a plant can be placed in any convenient place – on a balcony, a summer cottage or in a greenhouse. Such an artificial bed is also an original decoration of a garden or vegetable garden.
