Advantages of aniseed lofant herb
Tall bushes of the plant are decorated with long spikelets-inflorescences of white, blue, lilac, pink or orange. During the flowering period, the grass looks very attractive.
Thanks to essential oils, the herb has a strong pleasant smell, so it is often used in cooking, both fresh and dried.
The plant is also known for its medicinal properties. Decoctions and tinctures are prepared from stems, leaves and inflorescences, which are often used by folk herbalists.
A valuable property of a lofant is its melliferousness. Thanks to this, it gained popularity and now it is grown in whole plantations near apiaries. The honey of this herb smells good and contains many useful substances.
It is most convenient to grow a lofant from seeds. They are small, resemble poppy seeds and remain viable for 3 years. They can be sown directly into open ground in early May. But if the nights are still cold, then to protect against accidental frost, it is better to cover the area with crops with a film. After about a week, the first shoots appear.
Lofant can be propagated by dividing the bush. To do this, in the fall or spring, you need to chop off a piece of the root along with the buds and plant in a new place. The distance between the newly planted plants should be at least 25 cm.
The plant is very unpretentious and can grow even on poor soils, but in the latter case, the flowering will be weak and short-lived. On fertile soils, the flower can reach a height of 150 cm.
Drought is not terrible for the plant, but nevertheless, for a long and abundant flowering, it is better to periodically water and feed it.
The grass tolerates frosts well, but still it is advisable to cover it with an additional layer of earth or leaves for the winter.
In order for the plant to bloom continuously, it is advisable to cut off the flowering branches regularly. This stimulates the release of new branches with peduncles. Depending on the variety, the plant can be annual or perennial. It can grow in one place for 5-6 years, after which it is advisable to transplant it to another place.
Breeders have also bred new varieties with beautiful flowers of different shades. Therefore, choosing a plant for your garden is not difficult at all.
