Growing corn outdoors: stages
Growing corn is a simple process if you adhere to the rules of planting and care. You can eat healthy cobs already in mid-July.
Favorable conditions for growing corn
The advantage of planting corn in your garden is that you don’t have to set aside a separate area. One bed along the fence is enough for her.
Choose sweet varieties for growing corn
Choose early maturing varieties such as Dobrynya or Sundance. There are two ways to grow a crop: seed or seedling. The latter breeding method is suitable for the northern regions as the summer is short there. Sow seeds for seedlings a month before planting the crop in open ground.
Landing conditions:
- heat-loving corn, plant it in warm soil at a temperature of at least 12 ˚С;
- in the southern regions, plant in early May, in others – 2-3 weeks later;
- select an area with loose, light soil and shallow groundwater;
- the place should be sunny.
Prepare a plot for corn in the fall. For 1 sq. m, add 5 kg of humus, 200 g of superphosphate and 100 g of potash fertilizers. In the spring, before sowing seeds, add 50 g of nitrophoska to the soil.
Soak seeds in warm water for 6 hours before sowing. Sow in furrows 7-40 cm deep. Leave a space of 50 cm between crops and 10 cm between rows. Place several seeds in each hole. After XNUMX days, sprouts will sprout. Thin them, leave only the strongest.
When growing seedlings, fill the pots with peat-soil mixture and sow the corn seeds. When 3 true leaves appear, the seedlings can be transplanted into open ground. When transplanting, try to keep an earthy ball around the root system, as the plant is painfully tolerant of this procedure.
Corn can slow down its growth. To speed up its development, follow these recommendations:
- loosen the soil regularly and remove weeds;
- if the culture has reached 15-20 cm in height, spud it;
- when 6 large leaves grow, fertilize the corn with mullein infusion, superphosphate or potash fertilizers can be added to the aisles;
- remove side shoots, stepchildren, they slow down the growth of the culture.
If there is a moisture deficit during the ear formation period, ensure watering, but water stagnation should not be allowed.
Planting corn can be used to protect other garden crops from the cold and wind. The seeds can be sown on the border of the cucumber plantation. This neighborhood is perfect.
