Growing ampelous strawberries and caring for them, varieties

The strawberry season is short-lived. Trying to extend it, breeders have developed a new variety – ampelous strawberry. It is not difficult to grow it. Even a novice gardener will be able to harvest several times a year with a little effort.

In ordinary strawberries, the yield is low, and the immunity from diseases is not very strong. But breeders have bred various types of strawberries that give a good harvest and are not afraid of frost.

Ampel strawberry bears fruit several times a year.

These include the following varieties:

  • “Tuscany”. The bush of such a strawberry is small, but the yield is not bad. The fruits are ruby-colored. This variety is grown in an open garden bed and in pots.
  • “Homemade delicacy”. It is a curly ornamental variety that ripens early. The berries are small in size, but sweet, with a sour taste. The intense red hue of the fruit makes it stand out from the leaves.
  • “Queen Elizabeth II”. In this variety, the berries are large in size, juicy, reaching 40 g. During the season, it bears fruit twice or three times.
  • “Kletter is old.” A compact plant, flowers are placed high. When the berries are ripe, they sink to the ground due to their weight. The fruits are red, very juicy. Drought tolerant.

These varieties bear fruit even in winter. To do this, you need to provide them with proper care.

Growing ampelous strawberries and caring for them

The most common growing method is in a pot. Strawberries are planted in late summer. The depth of the tank should be at least 30 cm. At the bottom there is a drainage and it is covered with earth. A sprout is placed in the soil. Do not plant it too tightly or deeply. Holes for water are made in the container.

The next way is growing in the garden. The sprouts are planted at a distance of 30 cm from each other. The antennae can creep along the ground, or you can make a support, giving the bush a more decorative look. After planting strawberries, you need to water them abundantly.

Whatever the planting option, a soil mixture is needed – peat and turf in proportions of 2: 1 and a little sand

The plant is unpretentious to care for. But there are some nuances – ampelous strawberries do not like hot weather and bright sun. You need to plant it in a darkened place. Water it 2 times a day – in the morning and in the evening. It is not necessary to pour too much water – it is enough just to moisten the soil.

Every 15-20 days, it is necessary to feed the plant with fertilizers from potassium permanganate, boric acid, nitrate and others.

When the strawberry first harvests, the bottom foliage should be trimmed. Some also cut off the antennae.

When the bush turns 3 years old, you need to dig it up and plant a new one

The plant easily tolerates frosts, but it is better to cover it with burlap or thick cloth for the winter. In order to prevent fungal diseases, the leaves should be treated with preparations with copper.

This plant is a subspecies of strawberry. Because of its flowering and fruiting tendrils, it gives a good harvest. In addition, you can grow it at home in a pot.
