Groprinosin is available in pharmacies as a syrup that fights viral and bacterial infections, and also supports the body’s immunity. Its use is completely safe in children over 1 year of age. It contains the active ingredient pranobex inosine, which is especially useful in building reduced immunity. What are the main indications for drinking Groprinosin? We check how the syrup works, and inform about any undesirable side effects that may occur when using it.
Groprinosin – composition
The active substance of the drug is inosine pranobex (a complex containing inosine and 4-hydroxypropyl dimethylammonium 2-acetamidobenzoate in a molar ratio of 1: 3), which has been used in the treatment of immunodeficiency and viral infections of the skin and mucous membranes, as well as subacute sclerosing encephalitis. The other ingredients of Groprinosin are:
• potato starch;
• powidon K-25;
• magnesium stearate.
Groprinosin – indications
The main indication for taking Groprinosin is to support people who have reduced immunity or often struggle with recurring infections of the upper respiratory tract. In addition, Groprinosin is used in the treatment of herpes simplex type I (Herpes simplex) on the lip or type II herpes located in intimate places. Groprinosin may appear on the prescription of a patient diagnosed with the herpes zoster virus or chicken pox.

Groprinosin – contraindications
The main contraindication to the use of Groprinosin is hypersensitivity to inosine pranobex or any of the other ingredients of this drug. Signs of an allergy may include rash, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue.
It is also not indicated if you are currently having a gout attack (severe joint pain with swelling and reddening of the skin, or there is fluid in the large joints) or if your blood uric acid is elevated.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also contraindications to the use of Groprinosin.
Groprinosin – dosage
Adults, including the elderly (over 65 years of age), have the recommended dose of 50 mg / kg body weight daily. The usual daily dose is 6 tablets (3 g) per day (i.e. 2 tablets 3 times a day). The maximum daily dose is 8 tablets (4 g) per day (i.e. 2 tablets 4 times a day). Children over 1 year of age have the recommended dose of 50 mg / kg body weight daily, given in several divided doses.
The drug should be administered orally. The tablet should be washed down with a sufficient amount of liquid, preferably water. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet whole, the tablets can be crushed and dissolved in a small amount of liquid to make it easier to take. The usual duration of treatment is 5 to 14 days. After the symptoms have disappeared, administration of the drug should be continued for 1 to 2 days.
Other medicines containing the active substance inosine pranobeks are, for example, Neosine Forte or Isoprinosine.
Groprinosin – side effects of using the drug
The most common side effects occurring during the use of Groprinosin include, in particular, an increase in the concentration of uric acid in the blood and urine. Less common are:
• abdominal pain;
• itchy skin;
• dizziness;
• nausea;
• vomiting;
• arthralgia;
• bad mood.
Some people using Groprinosin also noted:
• diarrhea;
• constipation;
• lower abdominal pain;
• hives;
• polyuria;
• reddening of the skin;
• sleepiness.
Groprinosin – recommended precautions
Due to the fact that Groprinosin is a drug that increases the concentration of uric acid in the blood and urine, special precautions should be taken by people:
• diagnosed with gout;
• hyperuricemia;
• kidney stones;
• having a kidney problem.
In addition, it is worth remembering that during long-term use of the drug, kidney stones may appear in the body, which must be removed.
Groprinosin – interactions with other drugs
Groprinosin interacts with:
• immunosuppressants;
• azidothymidine;
• xanthite oxidase inhibitors;
• Medicines whose primary purpose is to lower uric acid levels (eg with diuretics).
Groprinosin – a method of storage
Groprinosin syrup should be stored in a room where the temperature does not exceed 25 degrees. Choose a shaded and dry place where children will not have access.
Groprinosin – price and availability
Groprinosin can be purchased at a stationary pharmacy or on-line. The price of a 250 mg / 5 ml (150 ml) syrup is approximately PLN 17. Groprinosin is issued to the patient without a prescription.
