As pregnancy progresses, groin pain can often be felt. The woman’s body is being rebuilt, the fetus is increasing every month, the center of gravity is shifting, and unpleasant sensations are possible. But it is still worth visiting a doctor for lingering pains, they can signal serious illnesses.
General information
The groin or groin area is the part of the lower edge of the abdominal region adjacent to the thigh. Here is the inguinal canal through which the large blood vessels of the thigh and the round ligament of the uterus pass, loops of the intestines can also descend here and form a hernia.
Causes of groin pain in women during pregnancy
Discomfort in the groin area can be explained by physiological processes.
For example:
- The formation of a new endocrine organ – the so-called corpus luteum, which takes the place of a fertilized egg. This can cause a cyst to form. Typically, the growth disappears in the second trimester.
- A rapid increase in the uterus, which causes an increased load on the musculoskeletal system. In this case, pregnant women are advised to rest more: sit or lie down.
- Weakening of the ligamentous apparatus and cartilage. This phenomenon is provoked by the hormone relaxin. A conventional bandage can eliminate discomfort.
- Lack of potassium in the body of the expectant mother. Medicines containing this trace element will help here.
Physiological reasons should not cause concern, they disappear over time or are solved by softening the daily routine.
Diseases causing groin discomfort
Groin pain during pregnancy is sometimes explained by more dangerous factors that can affect both the woman’s well-being and the development of the fetus:
- Ectopic pregnancy. Pulling pains are accompanied by bloody discharge, dizziness, and sometimes loss of consciousness.
- Inflammation of the lymph nodes. In this case, the woman may have a fever, bumps and lumps on the skin.
- Inguinal hernia. Discomfort on the left or right, a neoplasm in the form of a bag, can tell about this disease. Surgical intervention during pregnancy is unacceptable. Your doctor may advise you to wear a bandage and massage.
- Kidney stones. A woman is haunted not only by aching pains, but also by spasms. It is necessary to use more berry fruit drinks, in extreme cases, papaverine and no-shpa can be prescribed.
- Varicose veins. The main symptoms are bursting pain in the groin, swelling, cramps. They are especially strong at night. Special ointments and compression underwear will help cope with the disease.
- Herpes. If the disease occurs between the 39th and 40th weeks, then the expectant mother will have a cesarean section. Rashes, itching will tell about herpes. It is necessary to undergo a course of therapy as soon as possible.
Take care of your health to give birth to a strong baby. Don’t panic about groin discomfort, but make an appointment with your doctor right away.
Pelvic Infection
- • pelvic infections:
- • adnexitis;
- • endometritis;
- • proctitis;
- • parametritis
Infections can cause swollen and tender lymph nodes in the groin.
With tumors of the lymph nodes in the groin, there is the possibility of cancer or a benign tumor . It may also be a manifestation of early (primary stage) syphilis.
Stones in the kidneys
A low-lying kidney stone, ureteral stone will also cause pain in the groin. An attack of renal colic occurs suddenly, can last several minutes, hours or even days. It is characterized by the following symptoms: acute pain in the lower back or hypochondrium with irradiation along the ureter to the inguinal region, bladder, external genitalia. Frequent urination and blood in the urine will help in determining the correct diagnosis.
If the pain in your groin is not associated with either enlarged lymph nodes or kidney stones, then it may arise from the fact that the spinal disc compresses the nerves that go to this area. The reason for this may be osteochondrosis of the lumbar spine.
Infections and injuries
Pain in the groin during pregnancy may indicate genitourinary infections and inflammation, which lead to enlarged and sore lymph nodes in the groin area.
Other causes of groin pain during pregnancy may include :
- • Groin injuries.
- • Genital herpes.
- • Varicose veins of the great saphenous vein of the leg.
- • Aneurysm of the femoral artery.
For pain in the groin during pregnancy, seek help from a gynecologist. You may also need to consult a traumatologist.
