Basically, all greenhouse farmers install greenhouses and greenhouses for harvesting at their dachas, because thanks to such structures, the plants are reliably protected from the cold and are in an excellent comfortable microclimate. To date, options for such products are offered in a wide variety of many manufacturers. But this article will focus on the fact that a greenhouse is a wonderful cottage – it is a reliable enough design to grow vegetables in it!
What foundation is suitable
The portable greenhouse option under consideration is a great solution for any garden, regardless of the size you choose (4m, 6 or 8). It has the following characteristics:
- Arcs made of plastic, their length is 2.5 meters. They are not deformed and allow you to make a greenhouse of different widths. The fact that the arcs are replaced with plastic instead of aluminum, this significantly affects their cost (downward) and weight. Due to its lightness, the greenhouse can be easily transported, even if you do not have a personal vehicle.
- The covered material is strong enough, its density is 42 grams per square meter. Thanks to this, young seedlings will be preserved, even if there are frosts up to minus five.
- The size of the greenhouse is quite compact – only 4 square meters. Combined with lightweight polymer materials, it is easy to assemble and transport.
In general, if your choice fell on this particular model of a small greenhouse, it will be a fairly profitable investment for the future. After all, it also has many advantages:
- It is placed outdoors, and can also be placed inside the greenhouse if there is a possibility of frost. This will be, so to speak, additional protection for seedlings, especially capricious ones, from frost. Moreover, a 4m greenhouse will fit absolutely in any greenhouse.
- You will not need to worry about airing the plants in this mini-greenhouse every day, because thanks to the covering material, the air circulates perfectly.
- This is an excellent protection not only from the cold, but also from the baking sun, animals and birds.
- In order to install such a greenhouse does not require brute physical strength.
In order for the sun to have the maximum effect on the plants in the greenhouse, it is better to install it so that the entrance is on the south side. Be sure to take into account the fact that each greenhouse needs a reliable soil (or other foundation). You need to take care in advance that strong gusts of winds cannot budge your structure, and your work and efforts do not go down the drain. Even if the arches of the greenhouse just need to be stuck into the ground, in any case it is advisable to strengthen them from the outside (this can be done with the help of the earth).
Basic requirements for bases for greenhouses:
- They must be sure to be durable. After all, any foundation is part of the entire structure and it is worth, for example, taking into account that in the spring, when everything melts, the soil layers can shift.
- The microclimate inside the product must be maintained, since this is a very important factor for the cultivation and yield of plants and fruits.
If the foundation is installed correctly, then:
- there will be no drafts from below it;
- neither melted snow nor cold water will get inside;
- the temperature regime of air and soil will be maintained at a certain level;
- and also you will be able to control the level of humidity, at no additional cost.
From everything we can conclude that the base under the greenhouse, firstly, is a reliable support, and secondly, the effective protection of plants in the greenhouse from the effects of negative environmental factors. If you have got a mini-greenhouse that can be placed directly on the ground by simply sticking it into the ground, then it is not necessary to equip the foundation. Well, if you put such a structure for a long time, be sure to consider the climate in your area. In any case, it’s up to you.
There are different types of foundations, and before laying it, you need to decide which type you will choose. It is important to consider some features when installing the foundation with your own hands:
- The power of the foundation itself depends on the area of the greenhouse you have chosen – 4m, 6m, or 8m square, as well as on its dimensions.
- It is important to know how deep the ground can freeze during the cold season in your area, as well as how the snow thaws. This is important for the correct choice of materials in construction.
- Accessories with which you will fix the foundation, you should use only the highest quality.
Wooden foundation. It is very often used, especially for small greenhouses or greenhouses. Such a base is light and simple, moreover, it is quite quick to install or disassemble it if necessary. The main thing is that it serves you a lot, treat the tree by impregnating it with special anti-moisture agents and antiseptics.
Bars can be used those in which the cross section is 12 cm and they can be:
- install directly on the ground with a waterproofing layer previously laid on it;
- attach with self-tapping screws to wooden poles previously installed.
Concrete strip foundation. This type is very durable and reliable, suitable even for large greenhouses. It is made using sand, crushed stone, cement, formwork. The frame of the greenhouse is attached to such a foundation with metal studs.
When to Install
Of course, each summer resident does everything in his own way, some learn from their own experience, some by looking at other professional summer residents. For example, it can even be neighbors in a summer cottage. And, if we talk about when it’s time to install a greenhouse, then many of the neighbors do it in early spring, when such structures simply become necessary. And it’s good if you have a kit or you just thought everything through in advance and purchased it, armed with everything you need before the start of the summer season.
If you wait for a long time, then you can miss the moment and not do everything on time, as expected. Then the seedlings can outgrow, although it still cannot be planted in the ground. So why is it still autumn or winter?
You can install it completely on any day, when it only pleases you and is convenient. There are practically no other plants on the plot of land that could interfere with the installation of a greenhouse or for you to worry so as not to damage any process. When spring comes, in a pre-installed greenhouse at your dacha, the earth will begin to warm up much earlier than in the district.
Thanks to this greenhouse, you can start using it much faster. If you do not have a design yet, and you are only going to purchase it, please note that the price for it in the off season (that is, at any time of the year except spring) will be much lower. And when purchasing polycarbonate from honeycombs, you can install the structure absolutely at any time of the year!

Temperature conditions
When the growing season of plants is extended, it is imperative to take into account, including the period of early spring and late autumn, as well as their problematic nuances, which are night frosts. For example, during the day, when the sun shines quite brightly and is almost or completely cloudless, the temperature inside the greenhouse can reach up to plus twenty, then all thirty degrees Celsius, even if it is frosty outside. And at night, the same temperature regime can drop completely to a negative value.
Of course, in such an environment of temperature regimes, it is important that in the daytime heat is “stored” in the greenhouse for the night time. Then the greenhouse will adhere to the optimal temperature and microclimate for your plants. Water is just a wonderful coolant, as well as a heat accumulator. And it is with the help of it that you can control the optimal temperature level inside the greenhouse.
Be sure to read the instructions, thanks to which you may not have any more questions about using a mini-greenhouse, called the “beautiful cottage”:
- You can use the most ordinary plastic bottles or, as an additional option, purchase a metal barrel specifically for the purpose of greenhouse heating.
- Whatever container you prefer, you need to fill them with water.
- Having chosen a barrel, place it in a greenhouse, conveniently positioning it. Or, if you prefer to use plastic bottles, place them directly between the plants. During a warm day, the water in the tanks will heat up well, and at night it will cool down, giving off heat inside the greenhouse. Thus, inside the structure, the temperature regime will stabilize and there will be a favorable microclimate. Knowing the important and basic nuances, enjoy using your own mini-greenhouse!
