Green urine can have many causes, both mundane and serious. For this reason, it is worth paying special attention to the selection of foods. What does green urine really mean? Should we be afraid and consult a doctor immediately? We check why urine may have a green color and what is the reason for observing a change in its color.
Green urine and medications taken
Any discoloration of your urine should be cause for concern. The same is true of the green color, the most common cause of which is medication. You may notice that your urine has turned green or yellow-green after taking the sleeping drug propofol, usually used in anesthesia. This symptom should go away within 2-3 days.
Green urine and diet
Another cause of green urine that shouldn’t bother us as much as any other medical condition is diet. If a lot of green vegetables or chemically green foods appear on the daily menu, our urine may be green in color. Most often, asparagus is responsible for the dye, which can additionally change the smell of urine to a more intense one. It is the same with eating red beets, after which both urine and faeces turn a bloody color.
Green urine and urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa are another cause of green urine. The blue oil rod usually occurs in patients who have been hospitalized for a long time or in immunocompromised people. In addition, it attacks more often diabetics. In addition to the green color of urine, other symptoms may also indicate an infection of the urinary tract:
- burning sensation in the area of the urinary tract;
- itching when urinating;
- hematuria;
- pyuria;
- fever;
- lower abdominal pain.
In this case, you should see a doctor as soon as possible, who will assess which drug treatment is best for the patient.
Green urine – rare causes
Green urine can also have other causes. Usually, the disturbing color appears in people who have a liver problem (cirrhosis, hepatitis or a liver tumor). In addition, green urine is seen in patients with birth defects such as Hartnup syndrome and blue nappy disease. Both ailments may appear during infancy.
Green urine – what color should urine be?
The urine of a healthy person should be straw yellow in color. In the fluid filtered by the kidneys, apart from water, minerals and dyes, there should be no erythrocytes, leukocytes, ketone bodies, glucose and proteins. However, we can only check this during a laboratory urine test. The first disturbing symptoms will therefore be related to the color of urine. If its color is still suspect for the next few days, we should see a doctor. This is especially true of pregnant women.
