Green radish for the winter
Green radish is a valuable root vegetable containing a large amount of health-promoting substances. That is why it is often grown for the winter, it helps to fill the lack of vitamins in the cold season.
When and how to harvest green radish?
This type of radish is distinguished by a sharp taste and perfect ease of maintenance. The root crop is not afraid of drought and tolerates cold.
Planted for long-term storage, the radish can grow until the first frost. Therefore, each summer resident himself determines the optimal harvest time, guided by the weather forecast.
Before you start harvesting, it is recommended to crush the tops of the vegetable and wait until it dries completely. This will make the root crop even juicier and last longer.
Dig up the radish carefully so as not to damage the fruit with a shovel. Damaged roots cannot be stored. After harvesting, the vegetables must be dried in a dry, ventilated room or outdoors, carefully, cut off the tops with a knife and cut off small roots.
After drying, the radish must be sorted out, leaving only whole, healthy, medium-sized fruits for storage. Small or too large damaged vegetables and vegetables are not suitable for long-term storage. They can be eaten immediately.
Storing green radish grown for the winter
You need to store green radish in a cool room; a cellar is best suited for this purpose, in which the air temperature does not rise above +2 C °. The minimum storage temperature is 0С °. The optimal indicator of air humidity is 90%.
A small amount of radish can also be stored in the refrigerator. For this, ordinary plastic bags with small holes for air circulation are suitable.
The radish is stored in the cellar using wooden boxes, sprinkling each layer of vegetables with sand or ash. Or put them in plastic bags.
At least once a month, root crops must be sorted out, checking for rot or mold. Sick vegetables should be removed immediately to avoid contamination of the rest.
The lethargy of the radish is a consequence of the low humidity of the air. In this case, it is recommended to moisten the sand in the box with water and control the condition of the root crops, excluding their germination.
If it is not possible to store vegetables in the cellar, you can allocate a place on the balcony. The main condition in this case is that the air temperature does not fall below zero degrees. In severe frosts, you can cover the boxes of radish with a warm blanket.
Due to its unpretentiousness and resistance to frost, collecting and storing radish in winter will not be a hassle. And a vegetable rich in vitamins will come in handy during the period of winter beriberi.
