Grassland ryegrass for lawn

Perennial ryegrass, or perennial chaff, is a plant that is most often found in nature as a weed. It can be seen in meadows, a forest glade, or along roads. But, besides this, chaff is successfully used as a natural lawn on the site.

Description of pasture ryegrass

This perennial grass grows up to 70 cm in height and has a powerful root system. Its straight stems are smooth, stretching upward. Rich green leaves grow near the base. They are narrow, long, pointed at the end. The upper part of the leaf is matte and the lower part is glossy.

Pasture ryegrass is used for decorative purposes

Ryegrass blooms in summer, in the second year after sowing. In early July, inflorescences in the form of spikelets are formed on the sides of the stem. They are covered with scales and consist of several small green-brown flowers.

Perennial chaff feels comfortable in regions with a humid and temperate climate, where there are no severe frosts.

Using pasture ryegrass to create a lawn

The advantage of this cereal is that it forms a beautiful, thick, grassy carpet within 40 days after sowing. It can be grown in small areas or sown over a large area.

It does not recover for a long time after trampling or compaction, therefore it is ideal for playgrounds or sports grounds, places for active recreation. To this end, it is easy to grow the following varieties:

  • “Phoenix”, which is grown in the Central and Northwest regions of the country. Young plants are semi-shrubs;
  • “Leningradsky” – semi-erect bush with pale green leaves;
  • Cinderella is highly frost-resistant and tolerates drought well. These are low bushes that grow for a long time after mowing.

These varieties, like others, can be grown both in a sunny place and in partial shade. In this case, the soil should be fertile, with good drainage. Loamy soil, sandy loam and clayey soil are also suitable.

The average life span of a plant is about 5 years. But for this you need to periodically mow the grass and remove it from the lawn. After this procedure, the perennial will grow evenly and remain green until late autumn. Also, the cereal needs frequent watering and periodic feeding. To maintain a beautiful and well-groomed appearance, you need to thin out the lawn as needed, and also sow ryegrass annually.

Ryegrass is the grass that quickly creates an even, green lawn and thus gives a luxurious look to the garden.
