Grapes Anniversary of Novocherkassk

Breeding of new varieties and hybrids of horticultural crops is usually carried out by breeders, but there are exceptions. One of these deviations from generally accepted norms is an interspecific hybrid of grapes called the Anniversary of Novocherkassk. A new variety was received in his garden by an ordinary grower N.V. Krainov, who is known for having independently selected three well-known and large-fruited species: Transfiguration, Victor and Novocherkassk Jubilee. It is not known for certain about the “parents” of the Jubilee, but experts are inclined to believe that the variety appeared by crossing Kishmish Radiant and Talisman. The “pedigree” of the brainchild of a self-taught scientist is not as important as the characteristics of the Jubilee: large-fruited, excellent taste, high yield, and so on.

Characteristics of the hybrid

The first thing that catches your eye when meeting Novocherkassk Anniversary grapes is huge beautiful bunches with large shiny berries. Not many varieties will be able to compete with the Jubilee on this basis.

Important! The average weight of bunches of grapes is 1 kg, and some of the bunches can reach a weight of three kilograms!

  • the purpose of the Anniversary of Novocherkassk is table, this grape is good fresh, but it can be processed and used in winemaking;
  • the yield of the variety is high, every year this grape pleases not only with the size of the bunches, but also with their number;
  • the optimal load on the bush is 22-24 fruit shoots.
Attention! The Novocherkassk Anniversary grape variety has one characteristic feature: the berries gain sweetness just a few days before their technical maturity. In a short period of time, all the acid of the fruit turns into sugar.

It should be borne in mind that Novocherkassk’s Anniversary is not a technical variety, which means it is not intended for winemaking. It is possible to make homemade wine from this variety, but in small quantities. It is more expedient to grow table grapes for fresh consumption or for the purpose of sale.

Advantages and disadvantages

Those winegrowers who plant the Novocherkassk Jubilee rely on the large-fruitedness and productivity of this variety, because its most important advantage is its abundance and presentable appearance (as evidenced by the photo).

Anniversary has several other significant advantages:

  • balanced and very pleasant taste;
  • high yield;
  • resistance to fungal diseases;
  • good frost resistance;
  • fast and strong bush growth;
  • suitability for transportation and storage.

It would be strange if such a beautiful and large-fruited grape had absolutely no flaws. The Anniversary of Novocherkassk also has some disadvantages:

  • grapes require normalization and need proper pruning;
  • bushes need preventive treatment against fungal and other diseases;
  • stepchildren give a poor harvest;
  • bunches of grapes have to be protected from wasps, as insects can seriously damage their presentation.
Advice! In regions with not very mild winters, it is recommended to cover the Jubilee with earth or special materials.

Agrotechnical rules

The Novocherkassk Anniversary grape variety cannot be called very capricious and demanding, but this large-fruited hybrid needs an approach. A good harvest of beautiful and densely packed grapes will be harvested by the grower only if he provides competent care for the Jubilee and follows all the rules for planting and propagating this grape.

Preparing for planting

Young grape seedlings are sensitive to adverse external factors, such as lower temperatures, wind, insufficient or high humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right time for planting seedlings of the Anniversary of Novocherkassk. Most growers consider the optimal time for planting an early ripe hybrid to be mid-late April, when the air warms up to 10-15 degrees, and the soil temperature is in the range of 8-10 degrees.

Important! Reproduction of the Jubilee can be carried out in a variety of ways, including grafting on one’s own roots, planting seedlings, and others. Not all of these methods can be implemented in the spring, for example, grafting a green cutting to a green rootstock is performed in the fall.

The second thing the grower should think about is choosing a suitable place for the new variety. The anniversary of Novocherkassk is a vigorous grape, so it will need a lot of space. It is also necessary to take care of a reliable and durable support for a massive vine. It is better to find a place for grapes sunny, located on a hill or on a plain.

Cold and strong winds are contraindicated for heat-loving grapes, therefore the southern wall of an outbuilding, fence or house is considered the best place for planting it.

Grapes Anniversary of Novocherkassk is not too demanding on soils, but, nevertheless, it needs nutritious soil. The best option is black soil, but loam can also be used. High-lying groundwater can wash away the deep roots of the Jubilee, in which case they think over the drainage system.

Attention! Moisture should not stagnate in the soil under the grapes, because this can lead to rotting or infection of the roots.

Planting of grapes

There are several ways to propagate Novocherkassk Anniversary grapes. Most often, growers buy ready-made seedlings with an open or closed root system. In this case, it is necessary to choose the right planting material: the seedling should be strong and healthy, its roots – painted white, flexible and moist.

For planting seedlings of the Jubilee, pits about a meter deep are prepared, at the bottom of which a layer of nutrient soil or rotted fertilizers is poured. The roots of young grapes are straightened and sprinkled with earth. After that, the earth must be tamped and watered abundantly. The gardener must be prepared for the fact that soon he will need to cut the shoots and build a support, because the Jubilee vine grows very quickly.

It is much cheaper to propagate grapes by cuttings, grafting them onto green shoots. Cuttings need to be prepared. To do this, their lower part is cut 2-3 mm from the upper kidney, and the top is dipped in melted paraffin – this will help retain moisture and prevent the cuttings from drying out.

Attention! The rootstock is also prepared in advance. First, the entire old vine bush is cut, after which the wood is cleaned, dirt is removed. Then you need to split the vine using an ax or a sharp knife.

Before grafting, the bottom of the cutting is soaked in water or in a growth stimulator. Then the edges of the cutting and the crevice of the stock are pressed tightly so that the lower bud is on the surface. Wrap the grafting site with a material that tends to decompose. Often the joint is coated with clay or bandaged with polyethylene to retain moisture. After all the procedures, the stem with the inoculation is watered abundantly.

Vineyard care

As already mentioned, the Anniversary of Novocherkassk cannot be called capricious, this grape is unpretentious and not too demanding in care. However, only those owners who have paid enough attention and time to their vineyards can expect big harvests.

Caring for Novocherkassk Anniversary grapes is as follows:

  1. Water the grapes necessary as the soil dries out, while paying attention to the presence of natural precipitation in the region. However, twice during the summer, the Anniversary is watered, no matter what: before the flowering of the shoots and immediately after flowering. If the bushes do not have enough moisture, this will certainly affect the size of the berries and their taste.
  2. To retain water longer in the soil, use mulch. It is best to take humus for these purposes and fill it with a three-centimeter layer, filling the circumferential circle. In addition to retaining moisture, such a mulch will fertilize the grapes and insulate its roots in cold weather.

  3. feed Anniversary of Novocherkassk is needed at least once a year. In autumn, organic matter is used, and in spring and summer it is better to give preference to mineral complexes. Particular attention is paid to such components as potassium and phosphorus – the yield of grapes and the taste of its fruits depend on them.
  4. Given the rapid growth of Novocherkassk Anniversary grapes, it will have to be regularly trim and normalize. Pruning is recommended in autumn or early spring, until the juice has moved in the plant. On each bush, no more than 24 shoots should be left, the total number of fruit buds should be about 45 pieces. It will be more convenient to care for the Anniversary grapes if the bush is shaped like a fan. You need to shorten the shoots once a year, until the first bud. When clusters are formed, they are thinned out, leaving no more than one bunch of grapes on the shoot.

Young seedlings and cuttings are insulated even in the south of Our Country.
  6. Anniversary of Novocherkassk is resistant to various diseases, but from powdery mildew and mildew, you need to use preventive treatment. Spray the entire grape bush 2-3 times per season.

Variety review

Petr Ivanovich
I purchased the new Novocherkassk Jubilee grape from the very inventor of the variety, Krainov. All three seedlings took root just fine, already this year the shoots have grown several times. Three years later, the bushes were already quite powerful, and we harvested the first crop on giant clusters. I can say that my grapes did not hurt. True, twice a season I treated the bushes with Bordeaux mixture. The berries were very large, the maximum diameter was 5,2 cm. The clusters were large, well stuffed, and weighed, on average, 800-1000 grams. The taste of Anniversary is excellent, dessert. In general, we liked this grape.

Conclusion

Novocherkassk Anniversary grapes are an excellent interspecific hybrid with complex resistance to diseases and frost. This variety is perfect for private farming, for fresh consumption or for sale in local markets.
