Victor grapes were bred by amateur grower V.N. Krainov. Over the past twenty years, it has been rightfully recognized as one of the best due to its excellent taste, high yield and ease of cultivation.
Selection features
Victor grapes were bred as a result of many years of selection work. For crossing, Krainov used the varieties “Radiant Kishmish” and “Talisman”. This variety has such characteristics as high frost resistance, abundant harvest, resistance to diseases and pests. Gardeners over the past period have noted a high percentage of seedling survival, rapid growth and unpretentious care.
This variety was bred relatively recently – in 2000-2002. For such a short period, a complete description of the Victor grape, all its advantages and disadvantages, could not be compiled. But over the years, he deservedly received the title of “premium grapes”.
Hybrid Features
A feature of this hybrid is precocity. Before fruit ripening, 100-110 days pass from the beginning of the vegetative process. Grain growers begin harvesting in early August.
Victor has a massive, well-developed vine, on which a large number of healthy buds are located. Flowers combine quality belonging to both sexes, female and male. For this reason, it self-pollinates easily.
Blossom grapes Victor begins in early June. The active growth of grape clusters is enhanced after the systematic cutting of the leaves.
This grape variety has excellent winter hardiness. Without shelter, it tolerates winter frosts perfectly. Due to this important quality, it is widely regionalized. Seedlings quickly adapt to changing climatic conditions. Grapes take root well and are highly fertile both in the southern regions with a hot climate and in the harsh conditions of the central regions with a sharp change in temperature.
Description of grapes
Victor grapes are distinguished by large, large clusters that are conical in shape. The average weight of one bunch is from 500 g to 1 kg. Subject to all the rules of agricultural technology and proper care, the weight of a bunch can reach 1-800 grams. From one grape bush you can harvest up to 2-000 kg of crop.
It differs from other varieties in the absence of “peas” of berries. The fruits are very large, the average weight of a grape is 15-18 gr. Berries have an oval shape, the end is slightly pointed. Outwardly, the fruits are similar to the “lady’s finger” variety.
The size of the berries varies within the following limits: from 2×3,4 cm to 2,6×4,2 cm. Experienced gardeners often note even higher rates – with excellent care, the length of the grape can reach 6 cm, and the weight can be up to 20 grams.
Grapes have few seeds – no more than 1-2 pieces.
The color of the grapes depends on how long during the day it is in the sun: from rich light pink to dark reddish purple. The ripening phase also affects the color of the berries. As you can see in the photo, Victor grapes ripen evenly.
The taste of berries is noble and harmonious. The fleshy-rich pulp and thin peel, almost not felt when eaten, increase the value of this variety.
Grapes of this variety are ideal for the production of raisins.
The sugar content in berries is 17%, acids – no more than 8 g / l.
In addition to excellent taste, the Victor grape variety has such positive qualities as an attractive appearance and excellent preservation of the presentation during transportation.
Care of grapes
This hybrid variety does not require a special approach and attention. In order to annually receive a large amount of high-quality harvest, it is necessary to follow the basic rules of agricultural technology:
- Timely and plentiful watering. Waterlogging and overdrying of the soil are equally harmful to Victor grapes and are immediately reflected in the appearance and taste of the berries.
- Mulching is recommended to maintain soil moisture under the bushes.
- It is necessary to remove weeds in a timely manner and loosen the soil under the grape bushes.
- Vine growers advise in the spring to carry out a mandatory culling.
Compliance with these rules is within the power of even novice gardeners.
Winter hardiness of Krainova grapes
Grapes Victor has excellent frost resistance. Without shelter, he can endure frosts down to -22˚С – 24˚С. In the southern regions, you can not cover the vine. But in the central and northern regions, it is better to take care of preserving the bush and cover it in accordance with the generally accepted rules for caring for grapes.
Advantages of a hybrid
Despite the “young” age – the grape variety was bred about seventeen years ago – many winegrowers noted a considerable number of Victor’s advantages compared to other varieties.
- It retains its appearance for a relatively long time, which makes it invaluable during transportation;
- Excellent taste of berries;
- Bisexual, that is, pollinated independently;
- High yield;
- Subject to the rules of care, the grapes do not “pea”;
- Precocious;
- Ease of landing. The cuttings are taken very quickly. The percentage of rooted chibouks is more than 95%;
- Quickly adapts to climate change;
- The vine is quickly gaining green mass, ripens 2/3 of its length;
- Not picky about the composition of the soil;
- Unpretentious in care;
- High frost resistance;
- Raisins from this grape have a long shelf life and excellent taste. Also, berries are great for making compotes;
- High resistance to diseases: mildew, oidium and gray rot, as well as many fungal diseases. However, once every 3-4 years it must be treated with antifungal agents for prevention.
Grade Cons
In addition to the mass of advantages, this variety has several disadvantages.
- The high sugar content attracts wasps. As soon as the clusters begin to actively ripen, these insects literally attack the berries. It is very difficult to deal with their invasion. Professionals advise setting traps for wasps. Pour water mixed with a large amount of sugar into a glass. Poison is added to the syrup. This is the only way to fight during maturation.
- Since the Victor grape blooms very early – in early June – this is its plus, but at the same time a minus. In late spring – early summer there are late spring frosts. Clusters that are just gaining color may freeze. In this case, the harvest can not wait.
Reproduction of grapes
Thanks to its rapid rooting and high resistance, Victor grapes reproduce in four ways:
- seedlings;
- Grafting cuttings;
- Drains;
- Bones.
With any method, grapes take root perfectly, retaining varietal qualities, except for grafting. In this case, a hybrid can be obtained that combines the qualities of the mother bush and Victor grapes. When breeding with bones, you should be patient – it will take a long time until the first clusters appear on the bushes.
The video clip describes the main characteristics of the Victor variety:
Where is it preferable to plant Krajnova grapes
Victor grows well and produces abundant crops in full sun. It is highly undesirable to plant grapes near fences or near the house; neighborhoods with other trees and shrubs should also be avoided. The vine is growing fast.
Grapes of this variety do not like drafts. In especially hot and dry weather, abundant watering is required.
Victor grows on any soil, as it is undemanding to the composition of the soil. But the more fertile the land, the higher the yield. For gardeners interested in getting a large amount of the crop, it would be useful to know that the greatest fertility was noted when growing grapes on black soil.
Conclusion
According to the description of the Victor variety compiled by the author and many amateur gardeners, it can be noted that it is excellent for both breeding on a personal plot and for growing on an industrial scale.
