When is Grandparents Day in 2022

Despite the existence of the International Day of Older Persons, there is also such a holiday in the world as Grandparents’ Day, which is currently celebrated in more than 30 countries of the world, including Our Country. Its goal is to show the older generation its importance and significance for grandchildren.

By the way, this celebration does not have an approved exact date. Therefore, it is celebrated everywhere at different times. In Our Country this 28 October. In our country, this date is constant and does not change from year to year. In addition, it was not chosen by chance, because it was at the end of the second autumn month that the ancient Slavs celebrated Autumn Grandfathers – a holiday designed to strengthen ties with their ancestors and unite all generations.

Thus, in 2022, Grandparents’ Day falls on October 28th. Try to find time and visit your parents – your moms and dads.

Interestingly, in Our Country they also separately note Grandmother’s Day (May 26) и Grandfathers Day (January 22). And, for example, in the USA July 23 is National Gorgeous Grandma Day (Gorgeous Grandma Day). Separate grandma’s holiday there is also in Germany – it is celebrated there in second Sunday in October.

History

The idea to set aside a separate day for honoring grandparents was born not so long ago, namely in 2009. Then the Flower Bureau of Holland came up with such an initiative. More precisely, the “florists” proposed to establish a holiday on which grandchildren would give their elderly relatives flower pots with fresh flowers, symbolizing in this case the connection between generations – between roots (grandparents) and young sprouts (grandchildren and great-grandchildren).

Naturally, the initiative was taken up by many entrepreneurs related to the flower business, including ones. And since it was proposed to create a really kind and family holiday, the idea was supported by ordinary people. Thus, the holiday soon took root in Europe and America, and our country did not stand aside.

Traditions

The main tradition of the holiday follows from its history. So, on October 28, it is customary to give indoor flowers in a flowerpot to your grandparents. Moreover, many choose plants “with meaning”: for example, hibiscus as a symbol of prosperity and longevity, or geranium as a symbol of financial well-being and stability.

In addition, on this solemn day, it is customary for the whole family to gather for a festive tea party, look through old albums with grandparents and remember the past.

Also, in honor of this celebration, various charity events are organized. For the older generation, evening meetings with tea and delicious pastries, free exhibitions and guided tours, as well as concerts are organized. And some retail chains give discounts to all grandparents in honor of their holiday.

In addition, gifts are often collected for lonely elderly people in nursing homes. For example, in 2015, a similar action called “A Gift with Love” was held in Moscow.

On October 28, various flash mobs are also held. So, a couple of years ago, a dance flash mob “Give a Flower” took place in the capital, the participants of which tried to convey the essence of the holiday in the language of dance.
