Grace Lyn’s book is a printing masterpiece. It is so pleasant to hold and leaf through it, as if it were a Chinese lacquer box with secrets. The author grew up in America and created this exquisite wonder as a tribute to her Chinese roots. Grace Lin brought together various Chinese fairy tales and legends that captivated her imagination as a child, completed the details, colored with details (which she also drew). And most importantly, she wove into a single plot the story of the brave and enterprising girl Minli, who, in order to save her family from hunger, makes a long and difficult journey (of course, with a happy ending). Girls of 8–12 years old will read about the trials and adventures of their maturing peers with special pleasure.
