So that the holidays do not turn into an endless marathon of Ivan Vasilyevich and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we offer an alternative selection of films that can be watched by the whole family, including a grandmother and a hamster.
“The Adventures of Paddington” (2014)
- Directed by: Paul King
- Cast: Ben Whishaw, Nicole Kidman
The film about a talking bear who came from the distant jungle to London is not as widely known as, for example, the pictures of the Disney studio. A bear named Paddington, although originally from Peru, has the manners of a true gentleman, and with touching charm resembles our Cheburashka. London, like any metropolis, is unkind to visitors, and many adventures await the bear. The film can be reviewed, like any good movie, especially since two parts have already been released. A great option for the evening, and if you watch it in the original or with subtitles, you can tighten up your English. The views of London are conducive to dreams of the future: sooner or later the pandemic will end, it will be possible to fly to England and admire the views from the picture.
Sheena Queen of the Jungle (1984)
- Directed by: John Guillermin
- Cast: Tanya Roberts, Tedd Wass, Donovan Scott
Long before Xena and Wonder Woman, the Amazon Sheena, a fair-haired beauty raised in an African wild tribe, fought evil. This female version of Tarzan is able to talk to elephants and giraffes, lions tremble and obsequiously tuck their tails from her shout, and Sheena rides on a zebra. With a colorful fantasy setting from the 80s, the film has the most modern agenda: Sheena defends her tribe from pale-faced invaders who want to drive the Africans out of their homes. The damned colonizers could not even think that the graceful Amazon would bring down the wrath of the jungle on them. She is assisted by two blunt journalists. To shoot the picture, an elephant, a rhinoceros, five lions, four chimpanzees and a bunch of other trained animals were brought to Africa from Hollywood (!) (and then, by the way, they were taken back). The film carries the spirit of heroism, and it is still interesting to watch it, especially for those who love animals. After all, they are all real, not virtual, as in modern paintings. Viewing can replace a trip to the zoo or circus. Well, or suggest the idea of visiting Tanzania, since there are even direct flights there now.
“There, on unknown paths” (1982)
- Director: Mikhail Yuzovsky
- Cast: Roman Monastyrsky, Tatyana Peltzer, Oleg Anofriev, Alexander Filippenko
Soviet cinema gave children many wonderful films, but not all of them are known to modern schoolchildren and preschoolers. The story, based on the story of Eduard Uspensky, fits perfectly into the fashionable genre of “hit-boys” today. Schoolboy Mitya came to the village to visit his grandmother, and she sent him to give the hotel to her sister. However, it turned out that the grandmother’s sister is not just an old woman, but a real Baba Yaga and lives in a magical land. Exactly at the moment when Mitya appeared there, the insidious Koschey captured the Tsar and sat on the throne, intimidating all the fabulous inhabitants. But it was not there! Pioneer Mitya turned out to be not a bastard and fit into the war. Chases, adventures, a lot of humor and songs – the best recipe for a long winter evening.
“The Last Hero” (2017)
- Director: Dmitry Dyachenko
- Cast: Viktor Khorinyak, Sergei Burunov, Elena Yakovleva
The modern Russian fairy tale was very successful at the box office, and now the second part has already been released. So it’s not a sin to reconsider the first one. Or check it out if you haven’t seen it yet. Also the genre of “hit”. Once upon a time, there was a swindler Vanya, who predicted the fate of the rich for money, “removed damage” and handed out amulets. But suddenly Vanya ended up in the magical country of Belogorye, where he found out that he was the son of Ilya Muromets himself. And that only he, as the only surviving hero, is capable of saving Belogorye from disaster. The rest were killed by the witch. To fulfill his mission, Vanya needs to find the sword-treasurer. Koschey, Baba Yaga, Vodyanoy and the beautiful Vasilisa volunteered to help him. In such a motley company, Vanya went on a hike … Well, then for two hours you can safely forget about the snowstorm outside the window, enjoying the humor and plunging into the picturesque world of a wonderful country.
Nanny (1994)
- Director: John Paragon
- Cast: Peter Paul, David Paul
The comedy about two bodybuilders who are hired to look after twins, the nephews of a transport magnate, must have been watched by all parents – in childhood on videotapes. An enchanting action comedy filmed exactly in order to watch it with the whole family and laugh. Imagine two hefty brutals who come to well-bred boys and say that now they are their new nannies. Do you sympathize with the kids? And it should be exactly the opposite! The twins turned out to be those hooligans and gave their caregivers a real test of strength. In addition to the classic comedy set of food-throwing, wacky gags and bigfoot racing, the film has a love triangle and a happy ending. The most colorful thing in the picture is the nannies themselves, performed by actors Peter and David Paul. These big good-natured guys dress in such a way that you can lose the gift of speech. And they also love mommy, cooking and pumping iron. Aren’t the perfect men?
